      <p style="text-indent: 1em" rend="first-line-indent(1)"><seg source="#source-325-528">日支事變後しばらくして、北支へ行ったことがある。その時たしか北京へ行く車中だったかと思うが、アメリカの大學の教授だという人に會った。</seg></p>
      <p style="text-indent: 1em" rend="first-line-indent(1)">車中の退屈しのぎに雜談をしているうちに「日曜年<hi rend="font-size small(1)" snh:layout-kind="font-size" snh:layout-params="size-type=small;level=1" source="#source-600-702"><seg source="#source-633-669">（サベティック・イエァ）</seg></hi>の旅行だ」という話が出た。聞いてみると、アメリカの大學では、六年間勤めると、七年目は、一年間の休暇が貰えるので、その時に旅行をしたり、何處かへ行って研究をしたりするのだという話であった。その間もちろん月給は貰える、すなわち日曜日に相當するものが、年にもあるわけで、いわば日曜年なのである。</p>
      <p style="text-indent: 1em" rend="first-line-indent(1)"><seg source="#source-1136-1666">われわれ大學に勤めている者から見たら、たいへんいい制度で、日本の大學も、こういう制度を眞似たらいいだろうなどと話し合ったことがある。ところが、アメリカへ來て、子供たちをいろいろな學校へ入れてみると、どの學校にも、この制度があるようである。小學校の先生にも、もちろんこの權利があるので、近く日曜年がとれるので、日本へ行ってみたいなどという人にも會った。</seg></p>
      <p style="text-indent: 1em" rend="first-line-indent(1)"><seg source="#source-1666-2250">アメリカの教育は、私の知る限りでは、相當巧く行っているようであるが、その一番の原因は、小學校の教育がよいためではないかと思う。そしてそれがよいのは、小學校の先生の俸給が、かなり多い點にあるように考えられる。もちろん他の殷賑産業の從業員、あるいは大學の教授などと較べれば少ないが、その差があまりひどくないのである。それに小學校の先生は、門戸を張る必要がないので、相當生活は樂なようである。</seg></p>
      <p style="text-indent: 1em" rend="first-line-indent(1)"><seg source="#source-2250-2531">その一つの現われは、ヨーロッパ旅行が、小學校の先生方のなかに、かなりはやっている點にも窺われる。末娘の受持の先生も、昨年の夏休みに、同じ小學校の同僚の先生と、ヨーロッパへ遊びに行った。</seg></p>
      <p style="text-indent: 1em" rend="first-line-indent(1)">歐洲旅行などというから、何か會議にでも出席するのかと思ったら、そうではなかった。「子供たちにヨーロッパの地理や歴史を教えるにも、一度實地を見ておいた方がいいから」という話で、すっかり恐れ入った。政府かあるいはよその金で旅行するのではなく、自分の金で行くのである。聞いてみると、だいたい一ヵ月分くらいの收入を節約すると、夏休みにヨーロッパへ行ってこられるのだそうである。一ヵ月分の收入は、大體ヨーロッパ往復の船賃に相當する。ヨーロッパの方が、生活費が安いので、滯在期間中アメリカの生活費をそっちへ廻すと、餘裕が出るので、ヨーロッパ内の汽車賃がほぼ賄えるという話であった。</p>
      <p style="text-indent: 1em" rend="first-line-indent(1)"><seg source="#source-3388-3616">小學校の先生が、時々夏休みにヨーロッパへ遊びに行くことができ、そのうえ七年目ごとに、まる一年日曜年があるようなら、小學校教育も良くなるのが當然である。</seg></p>
