      <p style="text-indent: 1em" rend="first-line-indent(1)"><seg source="#source-403-669">北海道に前から住んでいた人は、よく昔はもっとずっと寒くて、雪もたくさん降った。札幌市内の大通りで遭難した人があったくらいだが、この近年は冬が非常に暖くなった、という話をする。</seg></p>
      <p style="text-indent: 1em" rend="first-line-indent(1)"><seg source="#source-669-1106">私なども、そういう印象を受けているが、一番の原因は、煖房設備や防寒裝備が良くなったので、寒さにそう苦しめられなくなったのだろうと思う。しかし氣温自身も、今世紀にはいって、徐々に昇りつつあることも、事實らしい。それは世界的の傾向であって、近年一部の地球物理學者たちの間で、問題になっている。</seg></p>
      <p style="text-indent: 1em" rend="first-line-indent(1)"><seg source="#source-1106-1504">アルプスや北歐の氷河が、今世紀にはいって、徐々に後退している、ということは、前から氷河學者たちが、指摘していることで、これは事實らしい。五十年前にアルプスに建てられたホテルの中には、當時は氷河に面して建てられたのに、今ではもう夏は氷河が見えなくなったものもある。</seg></p>
      <p style="text-indent: 1em" rend="first-line-indent(1)"><seg source="#source-1504-1980">グリーンランドは、海岸周邊を除き、内陸は全部氷の島である。中央部は、一萬尺以上の高山（？）になっているが、これは全部氷であって、その底は海面以下まで下っている。それは彈性波を使って、氷の厚さを調べた結果に基くもので、學界でも認められていることである。このグリーンランドの氷原の末端も、近年大分海岸から遠のいている。</seg></p>
      <p style="text-indent: 1em" rend="first-line-indent(1)"><seg source="#source-1980-2150">アメリカの氣象臺では、過去六十年以來の、全國各地の氣温を調べているが、平均して攝氏一度の氣温上昇を認めている。</seg></p>
      <p style="text-indent: 1em" rend="first-line-indent(1)"><seg source="#source-2150-2512">この原因は分らないが、もしこの割合で、あと五十年氣温が昇りつづけたら、北氷洋の浮氷が、夏の間は大部分融けて、船が通れるようになるであろうと言っている人もある。平均して毎日一度とか二度とか高いということは、氷をとかす時などには、大いに効く。</seg></p>
      <p style="text-indent: 1em" rend="first-line-indent(1)"><seg source="#source-2512-2623">ところで、もしこのまま氣温が昇りつづけて、現在地球上にある氷河が皆融け、</seg><app type="base-text-variant" source="#source-2647-2728"><lem><seg source="#source-2623-2647">グリーンランドや</seg></lem><rdg type="base-text"><seg source="#source-2701-2722">グリーランドや</seg></rdg></app><seg source="#source-2728-2850">南極にある氷も融けて、海へ流れ出したら、海面はどうなるだろう、という問題がある。</seg></p>
      <p style="text-indent: 1em" rend="first-line-indent(1)"><seg source="#source-2850-3062">これは二三人計算してみた人があるが、たいへんなことになるのである。恐らく現在よりも百八十尺は海面が高くなるだろう、という結果になっている。</seg></p>
      <p style="text-indent: 1em" rend="first-line-indent(1)"><seg source="#source-3062-3436">百八十尺も海面が高くなったら、現在の世界の大都會は、大部分海岸に近いところにあるので、それ等は皆海中に沒してしまうであろう。日本だったら、東京も大阪も、名古屋も福岡も、とにかく市と名のつくところは、大部分海の底になるわけで、たいへんなことになる。</seg></p>
      <p style="text-indent: 1em" rend="first-line-indent(1)"><seg source="#source-3436-3661">しかし、これは現在の氣温上昇が今後數百年も續いたら、という假定の上の話であるから、別に心配することはない。又心配しても、どうにもならないことである。</seg></p>
