        <p style="text-indent: 1em" rend="first-line-indent(1)"><seg source="#source-594-1878">試みに降る雪の一片を帽子なり袖なりに受けて細かに験査して見れば、綿や毛のようなものではない規則正しい六稜形の結晶を成している事がわかる。肉眼ではこれ以上の事は分りかねるが、一度顕微鏡下に照らしてこの小さい雪片を見れば誰しもその美しさに驚かぬ人はあるまい。いずれも六稜あるいは稀に三角形の氷の薄片であるが、その規則正しい輪郭は千変万化で如何なる美術家でもこれだけの変った形を作る事は出来そうにもない。輪郭の美しいばかりではない、この氷片中に縦横に細い溝が規則正しく通って様々の紋理を見せている。もし物好きな人があってこの模様を散らした着物でも作ればきっと面白い物が出来るだろうと思われる。この結晶の形については昔からずいぶん多数の人が研究したものであるが、近頃アメリカの人で二十年の月日をこの研究に委ね数百種の結晶の写真を集めた者がある。そしてその雪の降る時の天候や雪雲の高さまたは風向などによって結晶の形に如何なる相違があるかというような事を比較研究し、</seg><ruby type="furigana" rend="right" source="#source-1878-1899"><rb>斯学</rb><rt>しがく</rt></ruby><seg source="#source-1899-1969">の上に少なからぬ貢献をしたと称せられている。</seg></p>

        <p style="text-indent: 1em" rend="first-line-indent(1)"><seg source="#source-2075-3259">雪はどうして出来るものかという事は誰も知りたく思う事である。これはつまり比較的暖かい地上近くの空気が温気を含んだままで気流につれて上昇し、高層の気圧の低い処へ行くに従って膨脹して冷えて来る、ある処まで行くと雲と凝り雨になってしまう事もあるが、ごく寒い時にはこれが直ちに凍って小さい雪片となりこれが次第次第に大きく生長する。雪片のごく大きいのは時として直径一寸ほどになる事がある。こういう薄片が沢山に集合したのがいわゆる鵞毛となって舞い下りて来るのである。こんなに雪片がくっつき合っているのはつまり寒気がさほどひどくなくて雪片が温まっているからなので、ごくごく寒い摂氏零度以下二十余度にもなるともはや雪片に湿り気がなく従ってみんなバラバラに粉のようになってしまう。それからなお一層寒い時また軽気球などでごく高い空中に昇ると、時として針のような細長い雪がキラキラと降るを見る事があるそうな。</seg></p>
        <p style="text-indent: 1em" rend="first-line-indent(1)"><seg source="#source-3259-3503">空中で雪の始めて出来る処の高さは土地によって非常の差があって、例えば南米のアンデス山あたりでは一万八千尺ほどの処にあるが極北に近くなれば千尺くらいの処もある。</seg></p>

        <p style="text-indent: 1em" rend="first-line-indent(1)"><seg source="#source-3585-3609">天気のよい日、</seg><ruby type="furigana" rend="right" source="#source-3609-3633"><rb>空際</rb><rt>くうさい</rt></ruby><seg source="#source-3633-3657">遥かに真白な雲が</seg><ruby type="furigana" rend="right" source="#source-3657-3675"><rb>刷毛</rb><rt>はけ</rt></ruby><seg source="#source-3675-3897">ではいたようにあるいは細かい鱗のように棚引いている事がある、あの雲は普通の低い雲とはちがって皆雪片から出来ているという。また寒中などに太陽のまわりに</seg><ruby type="furigana" rend="right" source="#source-3897-3912"><rb>暈</rb><rt>かさ</rt></ruby><seg source="#source-3912-4165">が出来てその輪の横に光った処が出来、あたかも日が二つも三つも現われたように見える事がある、あれもやはり空中の雪片が太陽の光を曲げあるいは反射するために起る現象である。</seg></p>

        <p style="text-indent: 1em" rend="first-line-indent(1)"><seg source="#source-4268-4932">降り積もった雪を一時に解かして水にしてしまったらどれだけの水になるかという事は実際上要用な事であるからこの事を研究した人は沢山ある。先ず新しく降った雪が一尺積んでいればこれを解かして水にすればザット一寸ないし八分くらいの深さになる。しかし高山などに積んで数ヶ月も解けずにいるのだとだんだんに質が密になって一尺の雪が五寸くらいの水に当るようになる。なお一層永く降り積もっていわゆる氷河などになれば、もうほとんど氷塊と変りがなくなるのである。</seg></p>

        <p style="text-indent: 1em" rend="first-line-indent(1)"><seg source="#source-5041-5474">雪と云えば白い物と相場がきまっている。雪が氷のように透明でないのはつまり雪片の中に空隙が沢山あるためで、丁度ガラスの粉が真白なようなわけである。ところが極北に近い終年雪の絶えぬ処では時として赤い雪や緑の雪が見られる。これは雪の中に生きている微細な藻類のために色が着いているのだそうな。</seg></p>

        <p style="text-indent: 1em" rend="first-line-indent(1)"><seg source="#source-5583-6103">雪は豊年の貢と云って作物のためになると称せられている。冷たい物が地面に降って作物の害にならぬのはちょっと考えると不思議だが、それはこういう訳らしい。冬の晴れた夜には地面は盛んに温熱を放散して冷却し、雪などに比べては遥かに低い温度に下がって土は凍って作物の芽も凍死する事があるが、雪で蓋をするとこの過度の冷却を遮られ却って凍死を免れるのである。</seg></p>

        <p style="text-indent: 1em" rend="first-line-indent(1)"><seg source="#source-6191-6635">ついでにこれは少し吾々人間に縁遠い話だが、火星の南北両極に当って白い処が見える。この白い部分が時期によってあるいは大きくあるいは小さく消長するので、これは多分我が地球と同様に両極は雪で蔽われているのだろうという事になっている。その大きさの消長するのは夏冬で雪が解けたり積もったりするためらしい。</seg><seg type="layout" source="#source-6635-6725" rend="chitsuki align(right) offset-from-end(1)" snh:layout-kind="chitsuki" snh:layout-params="align=right;offset-from-end=1">（明治四十一年四月十日『東京朝日新聞』）</seg></p>
