      <p><seg source="#source-313-654">色は万国共通の言葉であり，どこの国へ行っても一目で理解し合えるものであると思っていましたのに，アメリカに留学した３年間に，外国人との色に対する感じ方の相違や習慣の相違にぶつかって，まごついたり，失敗したりしたことがありました。</seg></p>
      <p style="text-indent: 1em" rend="first-line-indent(1)"><seg source="#source-654-2797">アメリカに行ってしばらくの間，私は英語の学校に通いました。クラスには，ハンガリア人，ポーランド人，スペイン人，ユダヤ人等，世界中の様々の国から来た人達や，アメリカ人なのにスペイン語を話すプエルトリコ島からやって来た人達がまじって勉強していました。ある日，生徒の１人１人が順番に，与えられた単語を，他の単語を使って説明させられたことがありました。例えば，“誕生日”といわれたら“生れた日”と答え，“遠い”といわれたら“近くないこと”と簡単に答えればよいのです。私には“ペール PALE”（英和辞典をひくと先ず，青くなる―顔色が―の意と出ています）という単語があたりました。私はその単語の意味を辞書をひいてよく覚えていましたので“顔の色が青くなること”と自信たっぷりに答えました。すると，どうしたことか，クラスの中が何となく，ざわめいて，かすかな笑いの波がひろがって行くではありませんか。おだやかな先生はニコニコ微笑されながら“顔の色がホワイトになること”と訂正して下さいました。とっさに私は何のことか理解できなくてキョトンとしていましたが，やっとどうやら“ペール”という言葉の持っている“悪いしらせを受けてショックで青ざめる”という状態を“青”という色に感ずるのは日本人だけの独特の感覚で，外国人は“白くなる”と感ずるのだということが分りました。でも日本では“顔色が白くなる”といえば，女性が一生懸命クリームや化粧水でマッサージをして色白に美しくなるという意味になってしまいます。またアメリカ人は“青くなる”といった私の答えに，頬にベッタリとコバルトブルーやウルトラマリンの絵具をなすりつけたとんでもない顔を連想したのかも知れません。</seg></p>
      <p style="text-indent: 1em" rend="first-line-indent(1)"><seg source="#source-2797-3042">またこれもアメリカに着いて間もなく，アートセンタースクールに通って，グラフィックの勉強をしていた時のことです。クリスマスカードをデザインする課題が出されました。</seg></p>
      <p style="text-indent: 1em" rend="first-line-indent(1)"><seg source="#source-3042-5024">私は張切って枝のニョキニョキ出た奇妙なクリスマスツリーを描き，それを美しいオレンジ色と黄色にしました。今まで一度も見たこともない斬新なカードが出来たと，我ながら得意になっていましたところが先生はいきなり“クリスマスの色は赤と緑です。オレンジはハロインの色ですし，この黄色はイースターの色ですから使ってはいけません”とあっさりやり直しを命じました。ハロインとは10月末のお祭りで人々はオレンジ色にうれた西洋カボチャをくりぬいて，ちょうど日本の西瓜のチョーチンのように，目や口を刻んで，中にローソクをつけて飾ります。また，イースター（復活祭）は卵からかえるひよこのやわらかい黄色がこの日の色なのだそうです。でも私にはオレンジ色をみてハロインを連想する習慣など持ち合わせていませんでしたので，先生の批評が納得できず“何て概念的な教育なのだろう”と大いに不満に思いました。ところがアメリカ生活を１年，２年と過すうちに，私にもだんだんアメリカ人の風習というものが分ってきました。各季節のお祭は，それぞれ個有の色がきまっていて，その日が近づくと，街の商店やショーウインドウは，その色一色に飾られます。何時の間にか街中やわらかい黄色で一杯に飾られると“ああイースターが近づいたのだ。もう春だナ”と思いますし，街中にオレンジ色があふれ始めると“もうハロインだ。秋も深まって来たナ”としみじみ思うようになりました。ですからクリスマスカードにハロインやイースターの色を使うのは，お祝いのカードを黒ワクにデザインするように間違いだったようです。</seg><seg type="layout" source="#source-5024-5048" rend="chitsuki align(right) offset-from-end(0)" snh:layout-kind="chitsuki" snh:layout-params="align=right;offset-from-end=0"><seg source="#source-5042-5048">画家</seg></seg></p>
