      <p style="text-indent: 1em" rend="first-line-indent(1)"><seg source="#source-331-981">雪国に育った私たちには、お正月に雪がないと、どうもお正月らしい気がしない。吹雪で障子がばたばたいうようでも困るが、炬燵にはいって、硝子戸越しに、庭の松の木にこんもりと雪がつもっているのを眺めて、蜜柑でもたべながら、寝正月というのは、大変いいものである。もっともこれは日本の話で、私たちの理想というのは、この程度のことである。しかしアメリカならば、そんなことを理想とはしないだろう。雪がほしかったら、雪を降らすことを考えるであろう。</seg></p>
      <p style="text-indent: 1em" rend="first-line-indent(1)"><seg source="#source-981-1292">実際のところ、アメリカでは、一昨年の秋頃から、人間の力で雪を降らすことを研究している。そしてそれはかなりの程度まで成功している。目的は、クリスマスツリーに雪をかぶらすのではないが、とにかく面白い話である。</seg></p>
      <p style="text-indent: 1em" rend="first-line-indent(1)"><seg source="#source-1292-1828">雪というのは、上空の零下約十度以下の寒い所で、水蒸気が水の状態をとおらず直接に凍って出来るものである。それには、水蒸気がたくさんあることと、凍りつく時の芯になるものがあることが必要である。冬の空はたいてい曇っていて、水蒸気はかなりたくさんあるが、それだけでは、雪は降らない。曇っているのは、雲があることで、雲というものは直径百分の数ミリという水滴である。</seg></p>
      <p style="text-indent: 1em" rend="first-line-indent(1)"><seg source="#source-1828-2322">そういう水滴が空中に浮んでいると、零下十度ないし二十度程度まで温度が下がっても、なかなか凍らない。そういう状態の水を過冷却の水という。冬でも雲は、この過冷却の水滴から出来ていることが多く、氷の粒から出来ている雲の方が少ない。うんと高い所にある巻雲とか、厳寒の時の刷毛ではいたような形の雲とかは、氷粒の集まった雲即ち氷雲である。</seg></p>
      <p style="text-indent: 1em" rend="first-line-indent(1)">ところで雪の芯になるものとしては、氷の粒が一番いい。それで水雲を氷雲にすることが出来れば、あとはもし水蒸気さえ充分あれば、雪が降るはずである。水雲の粒、即ち過冷却した水滴は、何か刺戟があると、凍って氷の粒になる性質がある。それで或る種の粉を過冷却した水滴に「種付」をすると、氷の粒になる。</p>
      <p style="text-indent: 1em" rend="first-line-indent(1)"><seg source="#source-2759-3511">この研究をしたのが、アメリカのＧＥ研究所のシェファー博士らである。沃化銀の細かい粉を、過冷却した水雲の中に飛行機でまくと、それが氷雲になることがわかった。実際大仕掛けに冬の広野で、この実験をして成功したのである。実際に地上まで雪が降ったかどうかは、確かな報告はないが、それも成功したという噂はきいた。私たちの人工雪の研究は、この氷粒からあの美しい六花の雪を作る研究である。これはもう大分前から完成しているので、実験的には、人間は初めからしまいまでの全過程にわたって、雪を作ることが出来たわけである。</seg></p>
      <p style="text-indent: 1em" rend="first-line-indent(1)"><seg source="#source-3511-4195">お正月が来て、また年が新しくなった。二、三年のうちには、アメリカではほんとうに雪を降らすことが出来るようになるかもしれない。シェファー博士は、最初の実験に実験室内で成功してから、一、二週間後には、もう飛行機による実験を始めたようである。あのスピードで、研究がどんどん進めば、間もなく雪も降らせられるであろう。もっとも飛行機など使えなくても、ちっともかまわない。お正月の炬燵に入れる木炭でもちゃんと配給してもらえれば、われわれの理想は達せられるわけである。</seg><seg type="layout" source="#source-4195-4258" rend="chitsuki align(right) offset-from-end(1)" snh:layout-kind="chitsuki" snh:layout-params="align=right;offset-from-end=1"><seg source="#source-4225-4258">（昭和二十三年十二月）</seg></seg></p>
