      <p style="text-indent: 1em" rend="first-line-indent(1)">前著『日本のこころ』の中に、露伴先生の『仙書参同契』の解説をした文章を載せておいた。その中で、古代東洋の神仙思想の精髄は、現代の科学と矛盾するものではなく、むしろ啓示を与えることも有り得るだろうという意味のことを書いた。</p>
      <p style="text-indent: 1em" rend="first-line-indent(1)"><seg source="#source-768-1238">その一つの例として、デデキントの連続の理論と、魏伯陽の神仙道とを、比較してみよう。現代の物理学はもちろん哲学までも、近代数学におぶさっているところが、非常に多い。その近代数学の最大の課題の一つは、連続の問題であった。ツェノンの逆理以来、この連続の問題が、少し大袈裟にいえば、近代数学における最大の課題であった。</seg></p>
      <p style="text-indent: 1em" rend="first-line-indent(1)">初等幾何学を習った人は、点が大きさの無いものであり、線は幅をもたないものであることを知っている。そして線は点が「連続的」に動いたあとであることも、一応承知している。しかしこの「連続」の問題は、少し深く考えてみると、非常にむつかしい問題なのである。もっともこれは専門外のことであって、仰々しく述べ立てる資格は全くないのであるが、幸い手近なところに非常にいい本がある。それは吉田（洋一）さんの『零の発見』である。十数年前に岩波新書の一冊として出版された時は、小冊子ながら天下の名著といわれた本であって、今日までも生命のある好著である。</p>
      <p style="text-indent: 1em" rend="first-line-indent(1)">この『零の発見』は二部に分れていて、その後半「直線を切る」が、即ち連続の問題を、非常に平易にしかも厳密に取り扱ったものなのである。『零の発見』を読まれた方には用のない話であるが、数学に全然無縁の方たちのために、一寸その一部を紹介することにしよう。</p>
      <p style="text-indent: 1em" rend="first-line-indent(1)"><seg source="#source-2412-3041">今一本の直線をとってみると、これはずっとつながっているので、直線を連続の代表としてみることには、まず異論がないとする。この直線が二本交わったところは点であるから、直線が点から構成されていることもまず認めざるを得ない。そうすると、大きさのない点がどういうふうに並べられると、連続した線になるかという問題が出て来る。もちろん大きさのないものが集まるのだから、無限個集まる必要があるが、この無限という言葉が曲者なのである。</seg></p>
      <p style="text-indent: 1em" rend="first-line-indent(1)"><seg source="#source-3041-3518">今一本の直線をとって、その上の一点を０と名づけ、右の方へたとえば一センチごとに点をとって、それらの点を１、２、３、……と名づける。この１、２、３、……のような数を整数ということは、中学で習われたとおりである。これ等の点及び以下点というのは、全部大きさのない点で、ただ数値に対する場所だけを示すものである。そうすると、</seg><hi rend="text-combine-upright" snh:layout-kind="tcy" source="#source-3518-3595"><seg source="#source-3536-3539">２</seg><g ref="#gaiji-1-9-20" source="#source-3539-3568">½</g></hi><seg source="#source-3595-3664">という点は、２の点と３の点との中間にある。次に</seg><hi rend="text-combine-upright" snh:layout-kind="tcy" source="#source-3664-3741"><seg source="#source-3682-3685">２</seg><g ref="#gaiji-1-7-88" source="#source-3685-3714">⅓</g></hi><seg source="#source-3741-3765">という点は、２と</seg><hi rend="text-combine-upright" snh:layout-kind="tcy" source="#source-3765-3842"><seg source="#source-3783-3786">２</seg><g ref="#gaiji-1-9-20" source="#source-3786-3815">½</g></hi><seg source="#source-3842-3899">との間にあることはもちろんである。更に</seg><hi rend="text-combine-upright" snh:layout-kind="tcy" source="#source-3899-3976"><seg source="#source-3917-3920">２</seg><g ref="#gaiji-1-9-19" source="#source-3920-3949">¼</g></hi><seg source="#source-3976-3994">の点は、２と</seg><hi rend="text-combine-upright" snh:layout-kind="tcy" source="#source-3994-4071"><seg source="#source-4012-4015">２</seg><g ref="#gaiji-1-7-88" source="#source-4015-4044">⅓</g></hi><seg source="#source-4071-4488">との間にある。分母が大きくなるのであるから、だんだん２の方へ寄って来ることになる。こういうふうにして、どんどん分母の数を増して行くと、２よりは大きいが、いくらでも２に近い点が得られる。話をわかり易くするために、分子が１の場合だけをとったが、分子も実は勝手な値をとっていい。例えば</seg><hi rend="text-combine-upright" snh:layout-kind="tcy" source="#source-4488-4578"><seg source="#source-4506-4509">２</seg><hi rend="fraction" snh:layout-kind="fraction" source="#source-4509-4551"><seg source="#source-4509-4518">５／７</seg></hi></hi><seg source="#source-4578-4584">とか</seg><hi rend="text-combine-upright" snh:layout-kind="tcy" source="#source-4584-4670"><seg source="#source-4602-4605">２</seg><hi rend="fraction" snh:layout-kind="fraction" source="#source-4605-4643"><seg source="#source-4605-4612">35／36</seg></hi></hi><seg source="#source-4670-4859">とかいう勝手な帯分数をとって、その点を全部書き込むことにする。分子分母任意の数を与えるのだから、点は無限に沢山出来る。このうち</seg><hi rend="text-combine-upright" snh:layout-kind="tcy" source="#source-4859-4936"><seg source="#source-4877-4880">２</seg><g ref="#gaiji-1-9-20" source="#source-4880-4909">½</g></hi><seg source="#source-4936-4945">とか、</seg><hi rend="text-combine-upright" snh:layout-kind="tcy" source="#source-4945-5022"><seg source="#source-4963-4966">２</seg><g ref="#gaiji-1-9-19" source="#source-4966-4995">¼</g></hi><seg source="#source-5022-5137">とかという点はわかり易いので、それぞれ2.5及び2.25という値をもっている。ところが</seg><hi rend="text-combine-upright" snh:layout-kind="tcy" source="#source-5137-5214"><seg source="#source-5155-5158">２</seg><g ref="#gaiji-1-7-88" source="#source-5158-5187">⅓</g></hi><seg source="#source-5214-5220">とか</seg><hi rend="text-combine-upright" snh:layout-kind="tcy" source="#source-5220-5310"><seg source="#source-5238-5241">２</seg><hi rend="fraction" snh:layout-kind="fraction" source="#source-5241-5283"><seg source="#source-5241-5250">５／７</seg></hi></hi><seg source="#source-5310-5856">とかいう点は、小数に書き直してみると、2.33333……及び2.714285714285714285……という値になって、いつまで行っても割り切れない、即ち循環無限小数になる。実は2は1.99999……のことであり、2.5も2.499999……なのであって、すべての整数及び分数は、結局循環無限小数である。数学の方ではこれを有理数といっている。無限小数であるから、小数点以下無限の先までつづいている。数ももちろん無限個ある。</seg></p>
      <p style="text-indent: 1em" rend="first-line-indent(1)"><seg source="#source-5856-6123">ところで２と３との間には、こういう循環無限小数即ち有理数の点が無限個あるわけであるから、これで２と３との間の線分はすっかり埋めつくされたかというに、決してそうではない。たとえば</seg><hi rend="text-combine-upright" snh:layout-kind="tcy" source="#source-6123-6210"><seg source="#source-6141-6147">√５</seg><note type="misc" subtype="unresolved" source="#source-6147-6183">［＃「√」の中に「５」］</note></hi><seg source="#source-6210-6216">とか</seg><hi rend="text-combine-upright" snh:layout-kind="tcy" source="#source-6216-6303"><seg source="#source-6234-6240">√６</seg><note type="misc" subtype="unresolved" source="#source-6240-6276">［＃「√」の中に「６」］</note></hi><seg source="#source-6303-6372">とかに相当する点は、この中には含まれていない。</seg><hi rend="yokogumi horizontal" snh:layout-kind="yokogumi" snh:layout-params="direction=horizontal" source="#source-6372-6538"><seg source="#source-6390-6396">√５</seg><note type="misc" subtype="unresolved" source="#source-6396-6432">［＃「√」の中に「５」］</note><seg source="#source-6432-6458">＝2.236068……，√６</seg><note type="misc" subtype="unresolved" source="#source-6458-6494">［＃「√」の中に「６」］</note><seg source="#source-6494-6511">＝2.449489……</seg></hi><seg source="#source-6538-7155">であって、これ等も小数点以下無限につづく数であるが、前の例とはちがって、いくら先まで行っても循環しない数である。こういう非循環無限小数は無理数といわれ、有理数とは全く別の数である。しかもこれまた無限個あるのである。それで線分から無限個の有理点をとり去っても、なお無限個の無理点が残っていることになる。即ち無限個の有理点を並べても連続した線は得られないので、その他に無限個の無理点をつけ加えねばならないのである。</seg></p>
      <p style="text-indent: 1em" rend="first-line-indent(1)"><seg source="#source-7155-7200">ところがこの無理数の中には、</seg><hi rend="text-combine-upright" snh:layout-kind="tcy" source="#source-7200-7287"><seg source="#source-7218-7224">√５</seg><note type="misc" subtype="unresolved" source="#source-7224-7260">［＃「√」の中に「５」］</note></hi><seg source="#source-7287-7293">とか</seg><hi rend="text-combine-upright" snh:layout-kind="tcy" source="#source-7293-7380"><seg source="#source-7311-7317">√６</seg><note type="misc" subtype="unresolved" source="#source-7317-7353">［＃「√」の中に「６」］</note></hi><seg source="#source-7380-7561">とかの他に、これ等とはまるでちがった性質の数もある。たとえば円周率として知られている3.14159……という数は、同じ無理数でも、</seg><hi rend="text-combine-upright" snh:layout-kind="tcy" source="#source-7561-7648"><seg source="#source-7579-7585">√５</seg><note type="misc" subtype="unresolved" source="#source-7585-7621">［＃「√」の中に「５」］</note></hi><seg source="#source-7648-7735">などとちがって、超越数と呼ばれる数なのである。それに対して</seg><hi rend="text-combine-upright" snh:layout-kind="tcy" source="#source-7735-7822"><seg source="#source-7753-7759">√５</seg><note type="misc" subtype="unresolved" source="#source-7759-7795">［＃「√」の中に「５」］</note></hi><seg source="#source-7822-8157">や有理数は、代数的数といわれ、或る一定の法則に従う数なのである。具体的な性質のよくわかった超越数は、円周率の他には数えるほどしか知られていないが、実際には無限個存在し、その無限の度は代数的数の無限よりももっと多いのである。</seg></p>
      <p style="text-indent: 1em" rend="first-line-indent(1)"><seg source="#source-8157-8582">だから直線の連続性は、無限個の有理点と、無限個の代数的無理点と、それよりももっと多い無限個の超越点とを合わせて、初めて得られるのである。線の構成要素は、大きさのない点である、それが無限個集まったものが線即ち連続であるなどと、そう簡単にはいえないところに、連続の本態があるのである。</seg></p>
      <p style="text-indent: 1em" rend="first-line-indent(1)"><seg source="#source-8582-9196">点が連続的に動いたあとが、線であるという表現には間違いがないが、これは空間の連続問題を、時間の方へすりかえた表現である。時の連続も、時を長さのない時刻の集まりと考える以上、直線の場合と全く同じことになる。静止というのは、長さのない本当の一瞬間の状態をいうので、これは時の点である。静止が無限個集まって運動になるという考え方をすると、有理点時刻、代数的無理点時刻、超越点時刻が、それぞれ無限個あることになる。</seg></p>
      <p style="text-indent: 1em" rend="first-line-indent(1)">こういう説明は、素人向きであって、数学者には却ってわかりにくいのだそうである。ところがこの間の消息を、もっとわかりよい形で説明してくれたのが、ドイツの数学者デデキントである。それは「直線が連続体を成しているというのは、直線を二つの部分に切断すると、その境に点は一つあってただ一つしかないことを指す」というのである。もっと卑近にいえば、連続した直線を二つに切ると、その切口では一方の端にしか点がないということになる。即ち左の線分の右端に点があれば、右の線分の左端には点がない、その反対の場合ももちろんあるというのである。これは実に面白い説明であって、以上述べたややこしい三種の無限点の関係が、この一つの表現で巧くいいあらわされるばかりでなく、この考え方によって、連続の性質が非常にはっきりしてくるのである。その詳しい説明を希望される方は『零の発見』を読まれるのが、一番の早道であり、かつもっとも利口な方法でもある。</p>
      <p style="text-indent: 1em" rend="first-line-indent(1)"><seg source="#source-10419-11387">時の問題にこの表現をあてはめてみると、話はもっと面白くなる。時の移りはもちろん連続であるから、それを或る瞬間で切った場合、過去には最後の時刻が無くて、未来だけに最初の時刻があるか、或いはその逆であるかである。それが連続した時の流れの本態なのである。そして古代中国の神仙道は連続した時の流れの中で、十二月卅一日の最後の時刻と、一月一日の最初の時刻との関係を、陰きわまりて陽に転ずるものとして取り扱っている。まさにこれはデデキントの連続である。少なくとも晦と朔旦との境界という問題をとりあげ、そこに深く思いを致したことは事実であって、古代中国の哲学者は、運動を無限小にしたものが静止であるというような気楽なことは、考えていなかったように思われる。</seg></p>
      <p style="text-indent: 1em" rend="first-line-indent(1)">デデキントが何処からああいう警抜な説明を思いついたかは知らないし、またそれが中国神仙道と全く関係のないことももちろんであろう。しかし連続の問題に悩み抜いていたデデキントが、もし『仙書参同契』を読んで、「天地陰陽運行已まずして、歳月日時終れば即ち復更始する」「歳でいえば年末年始の境、月でいえば晦日と朔日との間、日でいえば深夜の直後は、いずれも陰きわまりて陽に転ずる緻密のところである。即ちこの陰陽交渉の初頭において『震来りて符を受ける』のである」というあたりに来て、はたと膝を打ったとしても、そう突飛ではないであろう。「陰きわまりて陽に<hi rend="bouten 傍点 right" source="#source-12194-12236"><seg source="#source-12194-12203">転ずる</seg></hi>」という一句から、過去と未来との境の点においては、過去に時刻なく未来にのみ時刻があるという啓示を受けたとしたら、当然それはデデキントの連続にただちに導かれるであろう。</p>
      <p style="text-indent: 1em" rend="first-line-indent(1)"><seg source="#source-12487-13413">北大の入江教授からきいた話であるが、デデキントのこの連続の理論の発表は、一八七二年のことである。ところがその論文の序文に、この考えの発見は、一八五八年十一月二十四日であると断ってあるそうである。数学の理論の発見で、発見の日付がわかっているというのは、非常に珍しい例である。本来そういう発見は、或る一つの考えが頭の中で徐々に醗酵して、次第に一つの理論に形成されて行くのが普通である。だから発見の日付などはないのが当り前である。ところがこの場合は例外であって、ちゃんと十一月二十四日とわかっているのである。このことは、デデキントが何かの啓示またははずみで、この卓越した理論をひょいと思いついたことを示すものと思われる。</seg></p>
      <p style="text-indent: 1em" rend="first-line-indent(1)">参同契とデデキントの連続との話は、もちろん私の小説である。そして小説のようなことが、現実に現われることはまず無いと思っていい。しかし以上の話は、小説としては、全く荒唐無稽な或いは不可能な筋書ではない。私が一時神仙道に凝って、「全く新しい未知の分野を開拓しようとする科学者が、参同契を熟読翫味するならば、一種の啓示を得はしないかと思われる節があるくらいである」といったのは、このデデキントのことが頭にあったからである。</p>
