      <p style="text-indent: 1em" rend="first-line-indent(1)"><seg source="#source-385-792">シカゴの街は、大陸の真中にあるので、寒暑の差がいちじるしい。夏は華氏の百度を突破することがしばしばあり、冬はまた摂氏零下二十度、あるいはそれ以下になることも時々ある。しかしアメリカとしては、それでもまだ気候がそう悪い方ではない。それはミシガン湖に面しているからである。</seg></p>
      <p style="text-indent: 1em" rend="first-line-indent(1)"><seg source="#source-792-996">ミシガン湖は、日本の本州の半分くらいもある広い湖で、湖というよりも、海といった方がいいくらいの感じである。このミシガン湖を渡って、よく</seg><ruby type="furigana" rend="right" source="#source-996-1020"><rb>加奈陀</rb><rt>カナダ</rt></ruby><seg source="#source-1020-1041">の方から、寒い</seg><ruby type="furigana" rend="right" source="#source-1041-1062"><rb>気塊</rb><rt>きかい</rt></ruby><seg source="#source-1062-1241">が襲来してくる。それと南方のメキシコ湾から押し上ってくる暖かい気塊とが、交代にやってくるので、その都度気候が激変する。</seg></p>
      <p style="text-indent: 1em" rend="first-line-indent(1)"><seg source="#source-1241-1681">そういう変化は、数時間のうちに、華氏で三十度も気温が下るというような急激なものから、一週間交代くらいで天気がすっかり変るという比較的緩慢な変化までいろいろある。毎日の新聞の天気図には、これらの気塊の動きが分りやすく描いてあるので、それを見ていると、こういう変化がよく分って、なかなか面白い。</seg></p>
      <p style="text-indent: 1em" rend="first-line-indent(1)">四季のうつりかわりにも、この特徴があらわれていて、日本のように、秋から冬という風に、順当にはいかない。すでに十月のなかばに、初雪があった。朝起きてみたら、屋根も地面も真白になっていたので、すっかり驚いてしまった。まだ冬の仕度がちっとも出来ていないので、少しあわてたが、そのつぎの日から、また暖かくなって、東京の十一月のようないい天気が毎日つづいている。これから「インディアンの夏」という暑い時期が一、二週間やってきて、それから本式の冬になるのだそうである。このあたりでは、大陸的な気候の特徴として、秋が短い。しかしその短い秋を彩る木々の葉の色は、限りなく美しい。</p>
      <p style="text-indent: 1em" rend="first-line-indent(1)"><seg source="#source-2529-2562">シカゴは商工業ともに</seg><ruby type="furigana" rend="right" source="#source-2562-2586"><rb>殷賑</rb><rt>いんしん</rt></ruby><seg source="#source-2586-2673">をきわめているひどく汚い街である。煖房としては、無煙炭しか</seg><ruby type="furigana" rend="right" source="#source-2673-2685"><rb>焚</rb><rt>た</rt></ruby><seg source="#source-2685-2781">いてはいけない規則になっているのだそうであるが、どの建物もひどく</seg><ruby type="furigana" rend="right" source="#source-2781-2796"><rb>煤</rb><rt>すす</rt></ruby><seg source="#source-2796-2979">け、道路もかなり乱雑である。しかし郊外には、いい住宅地がたくさんあって、そういうところには、樹木が多く、日本の秋の美しさを</seg><ruby type="furigana" rend="right" source="#source-2979-2994"><rb>偲</rb><rt>しの</rt></ruby><seg source="#source-2994-3032">ばせる風趣が十分にある。</seg></p>
      <p style="text-indent: 1em" rend="first-line-indent(1)"><seg source="#source-3032-3266">この附近はどこまでも全くの平らな土地であって、五、六十年前までは、原始林であったところを拓いたのだそうである。樹木はその頃の立木を残したもので、亭々とした</seg><ruby type="furigana" rend="right" source="#source-3266-3281"><rb>樫</rb><rt>かし</rt></ruby><seg source="#source-3281-3287">だの</seg><ruby type="furigana" rend="right" source="#source-3287-3305"><rb>柏</rb><rt>かしわ</rt></ruby><seg source="#source-3305-3362">だのエルムなどが、家々の屋根をおおって</seg><ruby type="furigana" rend="right" source="#source-3362-3377"><rb>聳</rb><rt>そび</rt></ruby><seg source="#source-3377-3499">え立っている。それで、この附近では、まるで林の中で生活しているような恰好である。</seg></p>
      <p style="text-indent: 1em" rend="first-line-indent(1)"><seg source="#source-3499-3520">ほとんど全部</seg><ruby type="furigana" rend="right" source="#source-3520-3556"><rb>闊葉樹</rb><rt>かつようじゅ</rt></ruby><seg source="#source-3556-3724">であって、たいていは一かかえから二かかえ近い大木である。背の高いアメリカの三階建の家よりも、もっと高いところまで</seg><ruby type="furigana" rend="right" source="#source-3724-3742"><rb>梢</rb><rt>こずえ</rt></ruby><seg source="#source-3742-3802">が美事に繁っている。道路はどこもだいたい</seg><ruby type="furigana" rend="right" source="#source-3802-3826"><rb>真直</rb><rt>まっすぐ</rt></ruby><seg source="#source-3826-4063">になっていて、磨き立てたような鋪装の両側に、芝生がある。立木はこの芝生の中に残されているので、道路を縦から見ると、両側の大木の柱が、双方から空をおおって、緑の</seg><ruby type="furigana" rend="right" source="#source-4063-4087"><rb>天蓋</rb><rt>てんがい</rt></ruby><seg source="#source-4087-4122">がずっとつづいている。</seg></p>
      <p style="text-indent: 1em" rend="first-line-indent(1)"><seg source="#source-4122-4473">この芝生の中に、歩道がある。これは四尺四方くらいの大きさのコンクリート板を、ずっと敷きつめたものが多い。面白いのは、ところどころの板に、製造会社の名前と製造年号とが、刻印できざみ込まれていることである。中には千九百零何年というような</seg><ruby type="furigana" rend="right" source="#source-4473-4488"><rb>旧</rb><rt>ふる</rt></ruby><seg source="#source-4488-4739">い年号のものもある。そういう板は、さすがにすっかり旧びている。ひびなどもたくさんはいっている。もちろん初めは相当金をかけたのであろうが、これだけもてば安いものである。</seg></p>
      <p style="text-indent: 1em" rend="first-line-indent(1)"><seg source="#source-4739-4943">この歩道につづいて、どの家にも前庭があるが、それが全部芝生になっている。アメリカの住宅地で、日本と一番ちがっている点は、屋敷の周囲に、</seg><ruby type="furigana" rend="right" source="#source-4943-4958"><rb>塀</rb><rt>へい</rt></ruby><seg source="#source-4958-5030">を立てめぐらさないことである。どの家も、歩道から</seg><ruby type="furigana" rend="right" source="#source-5030-5051"><rb>五間</rb><rt>ごけん</rt></ruby><seg source="#source-5051-5269">ばかりさがって建っていて、この間の前庭は、一様な芝生になっている。それで町全体が公園で、その中に行儀よく並んで住宅が建っているという感じである。</seg></p>
      <p style="text-indent: 1em" rend="first-line-indent(1)"><seg source="#source-5269-5398">歩道に建ち並んでいるのと同じような大木が、この前庭にも、また家のうしろにつづいている</seg><ruby type="furigana" rend="right" source="#source-5398-5431"><rb>後庭</rb><rt>バック・ヤード</rt></ruby><seg source="#source-5431-5700">にも、ぽつんぽつんと到るところに立っている。後庭も全部芝生になっていて、子供のある家では、ブランコだの、砂場だのが、この後庭の中にある。車庫も原則として、後庭の片隅に建っている。</seg></p>
      <p style="text-indent: 1em" rend="first-line-indent(1)"><seg source="#source-5700-5919">立木は、前庭から後庭にかけて、枝を接して立ち並んでいる。それで家は、まるで森か林の中に建っているような形になる。この森の感じを一層強めるものは、</seg><ruby type="furigana" rend="right" source="#source-5919-5937"><rb>木鼠</rb><rt>りす</rt></ruby><seg source="#source-5937-6066">と小鳥たちである。木鼠は、多分原始林時代から居残ったものであろうが、もうすっかり人間に</seg><ruby type="furigana" rend="right" source="#source-6066-6078"><rb>馴</rb><rt>な</rt></ruby><seg source="#source-6078-6687">れて、餌をやると、つい目と鼻のところまでやってくる。朝少し早めに家を出た時などは、鋪装道路の両側に並び立っている立木の根本に、木鼠がとんきょうな顔をして控えているのによく会う。近づくと幹をぐるぐる廻って、人間と反対側の方へかくれる。ちょっと悪戯気を起して、子供たちと、計略して、幹の両側から近づくと、二、三度幹を廻って、どちへ行っても人間がいることにやっと気がついて、慌てて上の方へ逃げて行く。たいていは、</seg><ruby type="furigana" rend="right" source="#source-6687-6711"><rb>交錯</rb><rt>こうさく</rt></ruby><seg source="#source-6711-7295">している枝をつたって、一本の木から、隣りの木へと渡って行くので、地面へ降りなくても、かなりの移動が出来るようである。しかし広い道路を横切る時は、そうばかりとも行かないので、一旦地面へ降りて、路面を横切って、向う側へ行く。自動車が走っている鋪装道路の上を、木鼠が長い尾をひきながら、ちょこちょこと走っている景色は、映画で見るアメリカ風景とは大分ちがっているが、これもまたアメリカなのである。</seg></p>
      <p style="text-indent: 1em" rend="first-line-indent(1)"><seg source="#source-7295-7430">小鳥の種類と数の多いことも、この住宅地に住んでみて、初めて気のついたことである。うちでは</seg><ruby type="furigana" rend="right" source="#source-7430-7448"><rb>烏</rb><rt>からす</rt></ruby><seg source="#source-7448-7553">といっているが、山鳩くらいの大きさの真黒な鳥が、ずいぶんたくさんいる。</seg><ruby type="furigana" rend="right" source="#source-7553-7589"><rb>黒鳥</rb><rt>ブラック・バード</rt></ruby><seg source="#source-7589-7793">というのだそうである。十月の初め頃には、何の実をついばみにくるのか知らないが、何百羽と群をなして、やってきたことがある。胸の赤いアメリカ</seg><ruby type="furigana" rend="right" source="#source-7793-7817"><rb>駒鳥</rb><rt>こまどり</rt></ruby><seg source="#source-7817-7988">は群をなすことはないようであるが、いつでも二、三羽裏庭の芝生にやってきている。たいへん姿勢のよい鳥である。それから</seg><ruby type="furigana" rend="right" source="#source-7988-8018"><rb>瑠璃鳥</rb><rt>るりちょう</rt></ruby><seg source="#source-8018-8063">のような色の鳥もよくくる。その</seg><ruby type="furigana" rend="right" source="#source-8063-8078"><rb>外</rb><rt>ほか</rt></ruby><seg source="#source-8078-8138">名前の知らない鳥がたくさんいて、ちょっと</seg><ruby type="furigana" rend="right" source="#source-8138-8153"><rb>算</rb><rt>かぞ</rt></ruby><seg source="#source-8153-8261">えただけでも、十種類くらいの小鳥がくるようである。大都会の近くには、烏と</seg><ruby type="furigana" rend="right" source="#source-8261-8279"><rb>雀</rb><rt>すずめ</rt></ruby><seg source="#source-8279-8422">しかいないもののように思っていたので、初めはずいぶん珍しかったが、もうすっかり馴れてしまった。</seg></p>
      <p style="text-indent: 1em" rend="first-line-indent(1)"><seg source="#source-8422-8755">馴れるといえば、家族の者たちも、初めの一月くらいだけは、家の中の設備が便利だといって、ひどく喜んでいたが、もうあまり感じなくなったらしい。アメリカの生活の便利さといえば、日本では台所の話がよく引き合いに出されるが、本当は</seg><ruby type="furigana" rend="right" source="#source-8755-8788"><rb>地下室</rb><rt>ベースメント</rt></ruby><seg source="#source-8788-9057">に、その秘密があるようである。電気冷蔵庫も、ガスレンジも、もちろん便利なものであり、アメリカでは、生活必需品であるが、それよりももっと本質的なものは、温湯装置と煖房設備とである。</seg></p>
      <p style="text-indent: 1em" rend="first-line-indent(1)"><seg source="#source-9057-9156">ひねればいつでも湯が出るという生活は、ホテルなどでは、案外にその</seg><ruby type="furigana" rend="right" source="#source-9156-9186"><rb>有難味</rb><rt>ありがたみ</rt></ruby><seg source="#source-9186-9567">が分らない。住宅で、日常生活の中にそれがあって、初めてその効用があらわれてくる。台所、風呂、洗濯、掃除と、一日中湯を使うことが非常に多い。ホテルやアパートでは、温湯も煖房も問題はないが、個人住宅では、地下室にその装置をすることになっている。燃料はたいてい</seg><ruby type="furigana" rend="right" source="#source-9567-9585"><rb>瓦斯</rb><rt>ガス</rt></ruby><seg source="#source-9585-10442">であって、温湯のタンクにいつでも湯が一杯になっているような装置である。何でもないことで、湯を使うと水道の水が補給され、温度調節器がはたらいて、瓦斯が自動的に点火する、というそれだけのことである。小型のものは、日本にもいくらもあって、何も珍しい装置ではないが、ただ一つ感心することは、瓦斯代の安い点である。一家五人で毎日のように風呂に入り、洗濯器を酷使し、台所でも湯をふんだんに使い、その外料理は全部瓦斯であるが、それらを全部合せて、一月に四ドル半くらい払えばいいのであるから、瓦斯の節約という観念は、アメリカにはない。普通の労働者の一日の日給は現在十二ドルくらいである。</seg></p>
      <p style="text-indent: 1em" rend="first-line-indent(1)"><seg source="#source-10442-10697">温湯装置は、地下室のほんの一部を占めるだけで、一番の大物は煖房装置である。少し大きい家の煖房は温水であるが、普通は熱風煖房が多い。大きい重油の燃焼炉が地下室の真中にがん</seg><ruby type="furigana" rend="right" source="#source-10697-10709"><rb>張</rb><rt>ば</rt></ruby><seg source="#source-10709-10790">っていて、それから太い送気筒が、七、八本各部屋の床へ、</seg><ruby type="furigana" rend="right" source="#source-10790-10805"><rb>蛸</rb><rt>たこ</rt></ruby>の足のようにのび上っている。ちょっと怪奇な恰好である。隅の方に大きい重油タンクがあって、これは油屋が責任をもって時々補給して、決して切れないようにしておいてくれる。油屋とは、いろいろな契約の仕方があるが、「いつでも一杯」という契約欄にサインしておくと、冬中煖房のことは忘れていてよいのである。九月の終り頃、この契約をしておくと、翌年の五月頃までずっと、<ruby type="furigana" rend="right" source="#source-11333-11357"><rb>頃合</rb><rt>ころあい</rt></ruby><seg source="#source-11357-11446">を見はからってタンク車がやってきて、重油を補給してくれる。</seg></p>
      <p style="text-indent: 1em" rend="first-line-indent(1)"><seg source="#source-11446-11563">それは本当に忘れていてよいのである。重油の燃焼炉には、いつでも小さい点火用の</seg><ruby type="furigana" rend="right" source="#source-11563-11581"><rb>焔</rb><rt>ほのお</rt></ruby><seg source="#source-11581-12717">がついていて、全装置が自動的に働くようになっている。居間の壁に小さい温度調節器がついているので、その針を希望の温度のところに合せておけば、それで万事が片附く。室内の気温がその温度以下に下ると、寒暖計がはたらいて、電流が通じ、炉の火が自動的について、ぶうぶうと送風機が動き出す。少し冷え込んでくる夜明けなど、ふと眼をさますと、地下室で炉がぶうぶうと鳴り出すことがある。まことに勤勉なものだと、ちょっといたわるような気持になる。もっともいつか女房が、針金製のハンガーを、温度調節器にひっかけておいたら、ドアをしめた途端に、そのショックで針金が回路を短絡して、炉がぶうぶうと鳴り出したことがある。まだ夏のうちだったので、この熱風の御馳走には、一同大いに面喰らった。犯人がハンガーだと分るまでに、二、三十分もかかっただろう。その間中、家中で大騒ぎをしたわけである。</seg></p>
      <p style="text-indent: 1em" rend="first-line-indent(1)"><seg source="#source-12717-13212">地下室の今一つの設備は、洗濯器である。洗濯器も、石鹸水のタンクだの、乾燥器だのと、附属品がそろってくると、かなり場所をとるので、やはり地下室においた方がよい。要するに地下室は広いほどよいので、たいていの家は、家全体の下が、一間の広い地下室になっている。工作の道具や簡単な設備も片隅にあり、子供たちのブランコもぶら下っているという</seg><ruby type="furigana" rend="right" source="#source-13212-13236"><rb>塩梅</rb><rt>あんばい</rt></ruby><seg source="#source-13236-13502">である。冬の間の子供たちの遊び場としても、はなはだ有用である。個人住宅は、裏と表とがないと、ちょっと住みかねるものであるが、アメリカの家にも裏があることを知って大いに安心した。</seg></p>
      <p style="text-indent: 1em" rend="first-line-indent(1)"><seg source="#source-13502-13988">アメリカの生活合理化は、その秘密がどうも地下室にありそうである。テレヴィジョンが日本で普及しても、それは応接間の話である。台所を合理化しても、それは台所だけの話である。本当の生活の合理化は、地下室から始めなければならない。だから今度日本へ帰ってもなまじっかアメリカの真似などしないことにしようと、家のものたちと話している。</seg></p>
