『畸人伝』にもあるが清元の『保名』にもその名が残っている小西来山に、だれでも知っているだろう句がある。

けふの月ただくらがりが見られけり

句をただ句だけとしてみることがつまらないという考え方は、前の茨木理兵衛の「身の上や」でもそうだが、「けふの月」にいたっては殊にそうである。『今宮草』についてその前書きを見ると、この句は佳き戯曲小説と同じように打ってくるものを持っていることが感じられる。

母に別れてのち大酔に及ばぬときは一日も夢にみぬことなし、機嫌よきときはその朝こころよし、さもなき時はその朝こころよからずして、せめて今宵の夢はと待ちかぬるぞかし。
