      <p style="text-indent: 1em" rend="first-line-indent(1)"><seg source="#source-364-558">文化映画の中で特に自然科学を直接対象としたものを科学映画と呼ぶことにする。この科学映画は大別して大体二種類に分けられると思う。</seg></p>
      <p style="text-indent: 1em" rend="first-line-indent(1)">その一つはいわゆる「博物もの」で、色々の動物や植物の生態をうつして見せるものであり、他の一つは「理化もの」とでもいうべきものである。</p>
      <p>「博物もの」の中には「<ruby type="furigana" rend="right" source="#source-794-812"><rb>蛙</rb><rt>かえる</rt></ruby>の話」とか「<ruby type="furigana" rend="right" source="#source-830-842"><rb>蚊</rb><rt>か</rt></ruby>の一生」とか「春の<ruby type="furigana" rend="right" source="#source-869-893"><rb>呼声</rb><rt>よびごえ</rt></ruby>」とかいう風なものがある。これらは顕微鏡撮影とか、微速度撮影とかを用いて、普通の人間の眼では見られない現象までよく見せてくれるので、大変面白い。そんな特殊撮影をしなくても、普通では行けない場所とか、大変な辛抱をしなくては見られない生態とかを、いながら楽に見られるので、単に見ものとしても興趣がつきないものが多い。そして日本の科学映画では、この種のものにいわゆる珠玉<ruby type="furigana" rend="right" source="#source-1439-1457"><rb>篇</rb><rt>へん</rt></ruby><seg source="#source-1457-1477">が相当ある。</seg></p>
      <p style="text-indent: 1em" rend="first-line-indent(1)"><seg source="#source-1477-1537">もっともこの種の映画は、既に外国、特に</seg><ruby type="furigana" rend="right" source="#source-1537-1558"><rb>独逸</rb><rt>ドイツ</rt></ruby><seg source="#source-1558-1561">で</seg><ruby type="furigana" rend="right" source="#source-1561-1579"><rb>盛</rb><rt>さかん</rt></ruby><seg source="#source-1579-1701">に作られ、その手法が出来上っているので、比較的楽に立派なものが出来るのであろう。</seg></p>
      <p style="text-indent: 1em" rend="first-line-indent(1)">ところが、「理化もの」になると、話は大抵の場合大変むつかしくなる。元来、中学などでも、動物や植物の好きな学生はかなりあるが、数学とか物理や化学などの学科はとかく嫌われやすい。そういう題目をとりあげた映画を<ruby type="furigana" rend="right" source="#source-2010-2028"><rb>此処</rb><rt>ここ</rt></ruby>では「理化もの」と言っているのであるが、例えば『音楽の表情』とか『レントゲンと生命』のような場合になると、その説明に色々と迷っているようである。</p>
      <p style="text-indent: 1em" rend="first-line-indent(1)"><seg source="#source-2246-2509">映画で現象の説明をするとなると、どうしても線画が多くなるのは致し方ない。しかし線画の多いのは、どうもその映画全体を幼稚なものに見せる損があり、事実幼稚なものが多いのである。</seg></p>
      <p style="text-indent: 1em" rend="first-line-indent(1)">それでこういう「理化もの」にも出来るだけ線画を少くするようにした方がよいのではないかと思う。もっとも線画を少くしたら、観客に分らすことが出来ないと思われるかもしれない。</p>
      <p style="text-indent: 1em" rend="first-line-indent(1)">しかしその心配はないのであって、本当のところは、映画だけでは、いくら線画を沢山使って説明しても、結局分らないものは分らないのである。例えば『レントゲンと生命』などで、あの変圧器、整流器、陰極線などの線画の説明は、作った人はあれで<ruby type="furigana" rend="right" source="#source-3111-3126"><rb>誰</rb><rt>だれ</rt></ruby><seg source="#source-3126-3542">にもよく分るように現象を説明したつもりであろうし、また私たちには、説明の意図がよくうかがえて面白いのであるが、一般の観衆には結局は分らないのである。不得手な外国語では、知っていることはよく分るが、知らないことを書いてある所へ来るとちっとも分らないのとちょっと似たところがある。</seg></p>
      <p style="text-indent: 1em" rend="first-line-indent(1)">それでどうせ分らないものならば、思い切って「分らす」ということを初めから断念してしまうのが、この種の映画の一つの進む道ではないかと思われる。例えば線画による現象自身の説明などに余り労力を使わずに、実際の実験室の光景を写して、何だか分らないが<ruby type="furigana" rend="right" source="#source-3905-3920"><rb>怖</rb><rt>こわ</rt></ruby><seg source="#source-3920-4192">そうな器械だとか、何だかむつかしそうな実験だとかいうものを見せるようなやり方も一つの方法であろう。別の言葉で言えば、現象自身の説明よりも、その現象をつつむ雰囲気を説明するのである。</seg></p>
      <p style="text-indent: 1em" rend="first-line-indent(1)">ところでそういう種類の科学映画は、結局科学のディレッタントを作るだけで、科学普及の国策にはそわないという意見も出るかもしれない。しかしこの場合、「分る」ということが既に問題なのである。中学の物理や化学の授業では、分るということは、試験の答案が書けるという意味である。<ruby type="furigana" rend="right" source="#source-4594-4618"><rb>勿論</rb><rt>もちろん</rt></ruby>暗記しているという意味ではなく「分っている」という意味で答案が書けることを指してのことである。そういう風に「分る」ことが<ruby type="furigana" rend="right" source="#source-4798-4813"><rb>果</rb><rt>はた</rt></ruby><seg source="#source-4813-4932">して科学振興になるのならば、今日事新しく科学精神などを説く必要もないであろう。</seg></p>
      <p style="text-indent: 1em" rend="first-line-indent(1)"><seg source="#source-4932-5103">科学映画には単に講義や読書の代用品または簡易法としてよりも、もっと広くそして重要な道があるように私には思われる。</seg></p>
