      <p style="text-indent: 1em" rend="first-line-indent(1)">この『フランケンシュタインまたは今様プロメテウス』（Frankenstein, or The Modern Prometheus）は、一八一八年、著者二十一歳の時に書かれた。その前の年に、フランス、スイス、ドイツ、オランダの諸国を六週間で旅行した話をシェリーとの共著で出しているから、この著者もかなり早熟の天才であったのだろう。</p>
      <p style="text-indent: 1em" rend="first-line-indent(1)">しかし、著者自身「夫にはただ一つの出来事の暗示も負うておらず、ただ一聯の感情の暗示もほとんど受けなかった」と述べているが、夫シェリーの天才の影響なしにこの作品を書いたかどうかは疑わしい。もちろん、シェリー自身が筆を入れることはしなかったとしても、著者の幻想や情熱が夫の燃えるような影響のもとにあり、構想その他の点でいろいろの助言を受けたと考えられるふしもなくはない。シェリーはもともと、科学的な知識の習得と実験に興味をもっていたらしいが、当時の科学の水準が低かったために、中世の煉金術に興味をもち、幽霊を呼び出す実験に耽ったこともあるという。</p>
      <p style="text-indent: 1em" rend="first-line-indent(1)">一八二八年の夏、シェリーと著者はスイスに行き、偶然に詩人バイロンと隣り合せに住むことになったが、その夏は雨が多く、さむざむした日が多かったので、家に閉じこもる日が多く、所在なさにそこにあったドイツの怪談の本を数冊読んだが、そのころ『チャイルド・ハロルド』の第三章を書いていたバイロン卿の提案で、こんな通俗的な幽霊話でなく、みなで一篇ずつ、超自然的な出来事を土台とする高度の文学作品を書こう、ということになった。こういう主題は、その当時の<ruby type="furigana" rend="right" source="#source-2377-2401"><rb>澎沛</rb><rt>ほうはい</rt></ruby><seg source="#source-2401-2976">たる浪曼的風潮にも合致していたので、みんなで興奮して、さっそく書きはじめようと約束したが、そのうちに天気がよくなって、シェリーとバイロンはアルプスの山に出かけ、その壮大な風景に打たれて、雨の夜の陰気な約束などを忘れてしまった。しかし、この本の著者は忘れなかった。怖ろしさに歯の根が合わなくなり血も凍えてしまうような、そういう神秘的恐怖の物語――それを明けても暮れても考えたのである。</seg></p>
      <p style="text-indent: 1em" rend="first-line-indent(1)">ところが、ある日、バイロンとシェリーがいろいろ哲学的な問題を論じ、たまたま生命の原理について熱心に語って、最近におけるダーウィン博士の実験などにも触れたが、そのとき黙って耳を傾けていた著者は、怖ろしい暗示を感じて体を硬直させた。寝床に入っても眼が冴えて眠れなかった。そうだ、死体が生気を吹き返せないこともない。流電気はその可能性を考えさせる。生きるものの構成分子は造られ、接ぎ合され、活きた暖かさを賦与されるにちがいない。「私は見た、――閉じた眼で、しかし鋭い心的視力をもって――自分が接ぎ合せたもののかたわらに蒼ざめてひざまずく、穢らわしい技術の研究者を見た。」</p>
      <p style="text-indent: 1em" rend="first-line-indent(1)"><seg source="#source-3827-3958">こうして、見るも怖ろしい怪物の影像が筆者の頭にこびりつき、逐い払っても去らなかった。</seg></p>
      <p>「私は恐怖しながら自分の物語を始めた。その考えが心に取り憑き、恐怖の戦慄が全身を駆けめぐり、私の幻想のものすごい影像がまわりの現実に取って代ろうとした。」そこで、翌日、「それは十一月のある恐ろしい夜であった」という書き出しで怪奇な短篇を作りはじめたが、夫シェリーが、それを長篇にすることをすすめた。</p>
      <p style="text-indent: 1em" rend="first-line-indent(1)">この作品が一八一八年に出ると、浪曼派運動の風潮に乗じてたちまち大評判となり著者は四百ポンド（現在の私たちの七十万円以上にあたる）の大金を受け取ったというから、読者の少い当時としては最大のベストセラーになったわけである。爾来、今日にいたるまで、怪奇小説としてまず最初に指を屈するものが、この『フランケンシュタイン』であり、今では英語の辞書を開けば、フランケンシュタインということばは、「自分の造ったものに逐われて身を亡ぼすもの」という意味の普通名詞に使われている。この小説のできた動機は、前にも言ったように、俗悪な怪談に対して文学としてすぐれた超現実的な物語を書こうとするにあり、ふつう、そういう興味だけで読まれ、その意味で児童の読みものふうに再話したり、ただ怪物という主題だけを取ってこの作品に関わりのない怪奇映画にしたりされているが、「書きつづけているうちに、ほかのいくつもの動機が加わってきた」と著者みずから述べているように、シェークスピアやミルトンの塁を摩するひとつの荘厳な運命悲劇を書こうとしたことも事実である。ここには、『失楽園』等のサタンがじつは、みずからの<app type="base-text-variant" source="#source-5874-5928"><lem><seg source="#source-5865-5874">背負う</seg></lem><rdg type="base-text"><seg source="#source-5913-5922">背貧う</seg></rdg></app><seg source="#source-5928-6596">激情に逐われる私たち自身の影にほかならないという、痛烈な浪曼的イロニーがあり哀しみがある。そして同時に、それにもかかわらず人間の愛や徳を護りぬこうとする悲劇的な闘いがある。私たちの内部にはいずれも、影法師のように巨大な、呼べば応える、醜怪なフランケンシュタインがおり、重々しい噴泉のような激情でもって背後から私たちを逐い立てている。そして、ときには、私たちと面を突き合せてポーの大鴉のように羽搏く。ここに、この作品の不朽の生命があるのであろう。</seg></p>
      <p style="text-indent: 1em" rend="first-line-indent(1)"><seg source="#source-6596-6814">しかし、日本では、その名のわりあいにあまり読まれておらず、訳されてもいないらしい。すくなくとも、全訳としてはこの拙訳が最初ではないかとおもう。</seg></p>
