      <p style="text-indent: 1em" rend="first-line-indent(1)">How much dollar? を「ハ・マ・チ・ド・リ」と、居留地の人力車夫仲間できめてしまう。こうしてできた実用英語がピヂン・イングリッシュである。十九世紀の世界を、シナの開放と日本の開国で円形に完成した者は英語国民であったから、香港、上海、横浜と<ruby type="furigana" rend="right" source="#source-888-909"><rb>逐次</rb><rt>ちくじ</rt></ruby><seg source="#source-909-1100">つくられていった外人セツルメントで、土地のシナ人や日本人とのあいだで用いられる実用国際語も、英語を基調としたことは当然である。</seg></p>
      <p style="text-indent: 1em" rend="first-line-indent(1)"><seg source="#source-1100-1541">これにたいしてピヂン・ジャパニーズとでもいうようなものが、居留地の外人のあいだでうまれることも当然である。英語なまりで理解された日本語であり、実用国際語のヨコハマ版であり、欧米人の間で Yokohamaese またはヨコハマ・ジャパニーズと呼ばれたものである。進駐軍の兵士が Oh heigh yoh! と発音するたぐいである。</seg></p>
      <p style="text-indent: 1em" rend="first-line-indent(1)"><seg source="#source-1541-2162">そのようなピヂン・ジャパニーズは、役人との接触からでなく民衆との日常的接触からうまれてくるのだから、さしあたってはハリス公館のおかれた下田港で誕生したであろうが、そのための一冊のパンフレットができるまで体系化されるのは、なんといっても横浜の居留地が開かれたのちのことである。安政条約が規定した三港開港の時日は、一八五九（安政六）年七月一日とされていた。その前日、ハリスは初代横浜米国領事ドルを従えて下田から神奈川</seg><ruby type="furigana" rend="right" source="#source-2162-2195"><rb>本覚寺</rb><rt>ほんがくじ</rt></ruby><seg source="#source-2195-2498">に移っている。神奈川の代りに幕府が提供した横浜村の居留地の開港式に列した外人は四十四名で、米商館はウォルシュ・ホール商会、英商館はジャーディン・マヂソンおよびデント商会に代表され、いずれも上海で売込んだ</seg><ruby type="furigana" rend="right" source="#source-2498-2531"><rb>古強者</rb><rt>ふるつわもの</rt></ruby><seg source="#source-2531-2557">から成っていた。</seg></p>
      <p style="text-indent: 1em" rend="first-line-indent(1)">上海ではいまでもサランパンというピヂン・イングリッシュがつかわれている。ペケはマレイ語で「行く」ことであり、いったんピヂン・イングリッシュに編入されるや、欧米商館と足跡をともにしてひろがっていった。</p>
      <p style="text-indent: 1em" rend="first-line-indent(1)">文久二（一八六二）年版の『横浜見聞誌』に、「本町一丁目花鳥茶屋ならびに鳥をあきなふ、異人南京ここに来りてよりよりと買行けば<hi rend="bouten 傍点 right" source="#source-3045-3123"><seg source="#source-3045-3072">ぺけぺけさらつパア</seg></hi>と出てゆくもあり」と書かれている。ペケやサラッパアのピヂン・イングリッシュにおける位置は、さしむきこんにちのパンパンにあたろう。</p>
      <p style="text-indent: 1em" rend="first-line-indent(1)">横浜で発行された『チェリー・ブラッサムス』という雑誌のある号に、ピヂン・ジャパニーズが収録されているよしで、パスク・スミス氏の『日本および台湾の西夷』からそれを紹介してみる。</p>

        <p style="text-indent: 1em" rend="first-line-indent(1)"><seg source="#source-3958-4240">これらの単語が Serampan（こわれる）、piggy（移す、とりのける、もってゆく、すてる、ペケ）、nigh（ない）などと組み合わされて、季節で色変りはしませんか＝Atsie sammy eel oh piggy nigh? はまだわかるとして、</seg></p>
        <p style="text-indent: 1em" rend="first-line-indent(1)"><seg source="#source-4240-4327">灯台＝Funey high kir serampan nigh rosokoo となると、判じ物である。</seg></p>
        <p style="text-indent: 1em" rend="first-line-indent(1)"><seg source="#source-4327-4386">会話篇となると、いよいよ怪しくなる。</seg></p>
        <p><seg source="#source-4386-4389">「</seg><ruby type="furigana" rend="right" source="#source-4389-4401"><rb>乞</rb><rt>こ</rt></ruby>う卒直に余の言をなさん、余は他の日本商人とひとしかしらず、余の商品の値段を一言にして請求するのみ、これ余の家憲なり」＝Watarkshee atcheera kooni maro maro arimasu. Kono house stoats neigh dan backhary hanash.</p>
        <p style="text-indent: 1em" rend="first-line-indent(1)"><seg source="#source-4669-5130">いずれ劣らぬスーヴェニール――もっとも、その品々は、今日の日本人が見たら、よだれのたれそうなものばかりであっただろうが――をならべている日本商人が、私の店にかぎってお値段のかけひきはございません、と言うのである。それが、コノ　ハウス　ヒトツ　ネダン　バカリ　ハナス　となる。これにたいして、買手の外人が、</seg></p>
        <p>「余は汝の良識を讃美せん。思うに汝は汝の国民の品位をたかむることを望むなるべし。しからば汝はダラーの代りにキンサツにて代償を受取るや必せり」＝Walk-arimas, nei dan your a shee, Kinsatz sinjoe arimas. ワカリマス、ネダンヨロシイ、キンサツ　シンジョー　アリマス。これだけで、かの長仁義をきったつもりだから、おかしい。金札というのは、もしそれがたんに「紙幣」を意味するピヂン・イングリッシュでなく、正確に「金札」とよばれた特殊の紙幣を指しているとすれば、幕府の勘定奉行<ruby type="furigana" rend="right" source="#source-5796-5850"><rb>小栗上野介</rb><rt>おぐりこうずけのすけ</rt></ruby>の発案で慶応三年夏以来、神戸開港を機として大阪の半官半民の金融および貿易機関たる「商社会所」から発行されたものである。<ruby type="furigana" rend="right" source="#source-6027-6054"><rb>鴻池</rb><rt>こうのいけ</rt></ruby><seg source="#source-6054-6279">をはじめ関西財界の巨頭連が強制的に株式をもたされて設立されたものであるが、二度目の長州征伐に負けたあととて、関西方面での幕府の信用失墜して、この金札は</seg><ruby type="furigana" rend="right" source="#source-6279-6300"><rb>兌換</rb><rt>だかん</rt></ruby>紙幣だったにかかわらずほとんど信用されず、たちまち取付けにあうという有様だった。これが「金札」と呼ばれたのにたいして、時を同じくして横浜で、居留地かぎり通用ということで、同じく幕府が横浜の関税収入を引当てとして、三井家から発行させた紙幣を「銀札」と称した。それ以前にはおよそ外人が使用しうる日本紙幣というものは存在しないのだから、問答にでてくるキンサツがこの銀札であるにせよかの金札であるにせよ、ことがらが慶応三年以後にぞくしていることだけは間違いがなく、三百年の屋台骨まさに崩れんとして、いちはやく日本人の商業社会からサツの見放されていたこともまた間違いがない。</p>
        <p style="text-indent: 1em" rend="first-line-indent(1)"><seg source="#source-7148-7231">そこで日本商人はつぎのごとく語って堂々とことわる――</seg></p>
        <p>「日本帝国政府の紙幣の価値暴露せるをもって、余の協同経営者久しく不在なる間、汝の善言に従うことを得ざるなり」</p>
        <p style="text-indent: 1em" rend="first-line-indent(1)"><seg source="#source-7395-7620">こう英語でちゃんとその会話例の欄は書いてあるのだが、右側の、これを翻訳したヨコハマ・ジャパニーズの欄には、なんと、単に――Kinsatz yah dai oh, dora your a shee.</seg></p>
        <p style="text-indent: 1em" rend="first-line-indent(1)">パスク・スミス氏の著書にはこの『チェリー・ブラッサムス』という掲載雑誌のナンバーも年号も記載されていないので、この珍奇の資料のデートは内容から判断するほかはない。右文中に「日本帝国政府の紙幣」と書かれているからといって、明治以後のことだとするのはあたらない。条約はタイクンすなわち将軍の名で締結されているけれども、外国側でそのタイクンのことを「日本皇帝陛下」と記した例は、一八五五（安政二）年十月十四日長崎で調印された日英仮条約の前文に、その言葉が用いてあるのでも知れる。したがって、幕府発行の紙幣のことを「日本帝国政府の紙幣」と記載したとしても、文献のデートを疑う理由にはなるまい。</p>
        <p style="text-indent: 1em" rend="first-line-indent(1)"><seg source="#source-8501-8866">それにしてもこの文献が慶応三年以前のものでないことは、さきに述べたところから明らかである。してみると、横浜開港いらい八年の歳月を経ており、ヨコハマ・ジャパニーズも、独自の風格をととのえたものとしなければならぬ。事実それは、ととのえている――</seg></p>
