      <p style="text-indent: 1em" rend="first-line-indent(1)">フロベニウスの『アフリカ文化史』は、非常に優れた書であるとともにまた実におもしろい書である。そのおかげでニグロの生活は我々の追体験し得るものとなり、ニグロの文化は我々の理解し得るものとなる。我々はそれによっていわゆる未開人をいかに見るべきかを教えられる。フロベニウス自身が指摘しているように、人類の文化の統一は、ただこのような理解を通じてのみ望み得られるのである。</p>
      <p style="text-indent: 1em" rend="first-line-indent(1)"><seg source="#source-1041-1507">自分はこの書を読み始めた時に、巻頭においてまず強い激動を受けた。それは自分がアフリカのニグロについて何も知らなかったせいでもあるが、また同時に英米人の祖先たちがアフリカに対して何をなしたかを知らなかったせいでもある。自分はここにその個所を紹介することによって右の書に対する関心を幾分かでもそそりたいと思う。</seg></p>
      <p style="text-indent: 1em" rend="first-line-indent(1)">中世の末にヨーロッパの航海者たちが初めてアフリカの西海岸や東海岸を訪れたときには、彼らはそこに驚くべく立派な文化を見いだしたのであった。当時のカピタンたちの語るところによると、初めてギネア湾にはいってワイダあたりで上陸した時には、彼らは全く驚かされた。注意深く設計された街道が、幾マイルも幾マイルも切れ目なく街路樹に包まれている。一日じゅう歩いて行っても、立派な畑に覆われた土地のみが続き、住民たちは土産の織物で作った華やかな衣服をまとっている。さらに南の方、コンゴー王国に行って見ると、「絹やびろうど」の着物を着た住民があふれるほど住んでいる。そうして大きい、よく組織された国家の、すみずみまで行き届いた秩序があり、権力の強い支配者があり、豊富な産業がある。骨までも文化が<ruby type="furigana" rend="right" source="#source-2521-2536"><rb>徹</rb><rt>とお</rt></ruby><seg source="#source-2536-2655">っている。東海岸の国土、たとえばモザンビクの海岸においても状態は同じであった。</seg></p>
      <p style="text-indent: 1em" rend="first-line-indent(1)"><seg source="#source-2655-3390">十五世紀から十七世紀へかけての航海者の報告を総合すれば、サハラの沙漠から南へ広がっているニグロ・アフリカに、そのころなお、調和的に立派に形成された文化が満開の美しさを見せていたということは確実なのである。ではその文化の華はどうなったか。アメリカを征服したヨーロッパ人たちが、このアフリカの沿岸にも侵入し、侵入した限りは破壊し去ったのである。なぜか。アメリカの新しい土地が奴隷を必要としたからである。アフリカは奴隷を供給した。何百、何千の奴隷を、船荷のようにして。しかし人身売買はかなり気の</seg><ruby type="furigana" rend="right" source="#source-3390-3405"><rb>咎</rb><rt>とが</rt></ruby><seg source="#source-3405-3519">める商売である。それには何か口実がなくてはならない。そこでニグロは半ば獣だと</seg><hi rend="bouten 傍点 right" source="#source-3519-3582"><seg source="#source-3534-3558">いうことにされた</seg></hi><seg source="#source-3582-3869">。また Fetisch という概念がアフリカの宗教の象徴として発明された。呪物崇拝などということは全くのヨーロッパ製である。ニグロ・アフリカのどこを探したってニグロの間には呪物の観念などは存していない。</seg></p>
      <p style="text-indent: 1em" rend="first-line-indent(1)">こういうわけで、「野蛮なニグロ」という考えはヨーロッパの作り事である。これがまた逆にヨーロッパに影響して、二十世紀の初めまで、相当に教養の高い人すらも、アフリカの土人は半獣的な野蛮人である、奴隷種族である、呪物崇拝のほか何も産出することのできなかった未開民族である、などと考えていたのであった。</p>
      <p style="text-indent: 1em" rend="first-line-indent(1)">が、この奴隷商人の宣伝が嘘であることを立証したのは十九世紀以来の探検家である。なるほどアフリカの沿岸には、奴隷商人が荒し回った限り、ニグロ固有の文化はなんにも残っていない。そこにあるのはヨーロッパの安物商品、ズボンをはいたみじめなニグロ、ヨーロッパ人に寄生するニグロの店員、などだけである。しかし前世紀の先駆者たちが、この「ヨーロッパ文明」の地帯やその背後の緩衝地帯を突き抜けて、「いまだ触れられざる地」に達したとき、そこに彼らは至る処、十六世紀のカピタンたちが沿岸で見たと同じ華麗なものを見いだしたのである。</p>
      <p style="text-indent: 1em" rend="first-line-indent(1)"><seg source="#source-5085-5220">フロベニウスは一九〇六年、その第一回の探検旅行の際には、なお、コンゴーのカッサイ・サンク</seg><g ref="#gaiji-1-6-92" source="#source-5220-5262">ㇽ</g><seg source="#source-5262-5397">ル地方で、カピタンが描いたと同じような村々を見た。そこの街道は何マイルも続いて両側に四重の</seg><ruby type="furigana" rend="right" source="#source-5397-5418"><rb>棕櫚</rb><rt>しゅろ</rt></ruby><seg source="#source-5418-5481">の並み木を持っていた。そこの小家はいずれも</seg><ruby type="furigana" rend="right" source="#source-5481-5493"><rb>惚</rb><rt>ほ</rt></ruby><seg source="#source-5493-5496">れ</seg><ruby type="furigana" rend="right" source="#source-5496-5508"><rb>惚</rb><rt>ぽ</rt></ruby><seg source="#source-5508-5598">れするような編み細工や彫刻で構成せられた芸術品であった。男は</seg><ruby type="furigana" rend="right" source="#source-5598-5622"><rb>象眼</rb><rt>ぞうがん</rt></ruby><seg source="#source-5622-5655">のある刃や蛇皮を巻いた</seg><ruby type="furigana" rend="right" source="#source-5655-5714"><rb><g ref="#gaiji-3-1-86-28" source="#source-5655-5702">欛</g></rb><rt>つか</rt></ruby><seg source="#source-5714-5855">の鉄の武器、銅の武器を持たぬはなかった。びろうどや絹のような布は至る処で見受けられた。杯、笛、</seg><ruby type="furigana" rend="right" source="#source-5855-5870"><rb>匙</rb><rt>さじ</rt></ruby><seg source="#source-5870-5989">などは、どこで見ても、ヨーロッパのロマネスクの作品と比し得べき芸術品であった。</seg></p>
      <p style="text-indent: 1em" rend="first-line-indent(1)"><seg source="#source-5989-6522">しかもこれらすべては、美しく熟した果物の表面を飾っている柔らかい色づいた表皮のようなものである。その下に美味な果肉がある。すなわち民族全体は、最も小さい子供から最も年長の老人に至るまで、その身ぶり、動作、礼儀などに、自明のこととして明白な差別や品位や優美などを現わしていた。王侯や富者の家族においても、従者や奴隷の家族においても、その点は同じであった。</seg></p>
      <p style="text-indent: 1em" rend="first-line-indent(1)"><seg source="#source-6522-6722">フロベニウスはそこに教養の均斉を見いだした。上下がこれほどそろって教養を持っているということは、北方の文明人の国にはどこにもない。</seg></p>
      <p style="text-indent: 1em" rend="first-line-indent(1)">が、この最後の「幸福の島」もまもなくヨーロッパ文明の洪水に浸された。そうして平和な美しさは洗い去られてしまった。</p>
      <p style="text-indent: 1em" rend="first-line-indent(1)"><seg source="#source-6895-7791">このような体験を持った人々は決して少なくない。スピークやグラント、リヴィングストーン、カメロン、スタンリー、シュワインフルト、ユンケル、デ・ブラッザ、なども同じものを見たのである。が、前世紀には、アフリカの高い文化はすべてイスラムに帰因するという迷信が支配していた。スーダンの文化などもその視点から見られた。しかしその後の研究によれば、スーダンの民族の美しい衣服はアフリカ固有のものであってムハメッドの誕生よりも古い。またスーダンの国家の特有の組織はイスラムよりもはるか前からあり、ニグロ・アフリカの耕作や教育の技術、市民的な秩序や手工芸などは、中央ヨーロッパにおけるよりも千年も古いのである。</seg></p>
      <p>「アフリカ的なるもの」は、要約して言えば、合目的的、峻厳、構造的である。この特徴はニグロ・アフリカのあらゆる文化産物に現われている。アフリカの民族は快活で、多弁で、楽天的であるが、しかしその精神的な表現の様式は、今日も昔も同じくまじめで厳粛である。この様式もいつの時かに始まり、そうして後に固定したものに相違ない。が、その謎めいて古い起源が我々には魔力的に感ぜられるのである。</p>
