別に取り立てて感想もありませぬが、私は応挙と其の時代に憧憬を持つて居るものです。あの落着いた立派な作風、あのガツシリと完成した描法など真に好いと思ひます。今の様に忙しくては到底大作などは出来ませぬが、あの時代の画家は実にのんびりと制作に従つて居て心行くまで研究を積まれたものと思はれます。慥か今から三十年も前の話でありますが、如雲社と云ふ画家の集合展覧会がありました。毎月十一日を期日として別に誰派の区別もなく自分の好いたままに一点でも二点でも作品を持ち寄つてそれを陳べて互ひに見合つたものです。其の当時は景年さんでも無造作な風体でやつて来られるし、栖鳳さんや春挙さんなどもお若い頃で、会場の真中には赤毛氈を布いて火鉢と茶位の設備ではありますが、よい絵の前では坐つて離れなかつたり、画論に華を咲かせたり、本当に悠暢なものでした。それから考へ合しても、応挙の時代が想像されて床しい極みであります。（談）（大正十四年）
