車道には電車がきしり、自動車が辷つて流れてゐる。彼の横を、彼の気持とは全然かかはりのない人々が打ち続いて通つて行く。彼は絶望的な眼をそれらに投げ、力の抜けた足を引きずりながらのろのろと元来た道を引返し始めた。彼は自分の肩に何か重々しいものがのしかかつて来るやうな気がした。昨日まで暮してゐた病院の風景や、病友たちの顔が泛んで来て、くりくり坊主や、猫の足のやうに指の落ちた手や、喉頭部に明けた穴にさしこんだカニューレで息をする無気味な呼吸音や、さういふものが奇怪な幻想のやうに頭の中をぐるぐると廻つた。それはちやうど、明るい午ひるさがりの街中を、癩院を背負つて歩いてゐるやうな感じであつた。
