お腹の空いた狼が野道を歩いて来ますと、遠くに一人の赤ん坊が寝ているのを見つけました。狼は大喜びで走って来てみると、それは誰かが落した大きな人形でした。

「ええ、この役立たず奴めが」

と狼はあと足で蹴散らかしました。

「乃公おれのたべ物にならない位ならば何だって人間の形をして生まれて来た」

人形はニコニコして答えました。

「お気の毒様ですね。あなたのように何でも可愛がる事を知らないものには私は役立たずに見えるでしょう。しかし人間の中には私を生命よりも大切な友達にして下さる方がいくらでもありますよ。私は狼のお役に立つよりも人間のお役に立った方がうれしいと思います」
