      <p style="text-indent: 1em" rend="first-line-indent(1)"><seg source="#source-647-749">比較的新しい地質時代に日本とアジア大陸とは陸続きになっていて、象や</seg><ruby type="furigana" rend="right" source="#source-749-764"><rb>犀</rb><rt>さい</rt></ruby><seg source="#source-764-1132">の先祖が大陸からの徒歩旅行の果に、東端の日本の土地に到着し、現在の吾々の住まっているここらあたりをうろついていたということは地質学者の研究によって明らかになった事実である。しかしその頃既に人間の先祖が象と一緒に歩いていたかどうかはよく分らない。</seg></p>
      <p style="text-indent: 1em" rend="first-line-indent(1)"><seg source="#source-1132-1899">それはとにかく、日本が大陸から千切れて島国になっても、船というものを造ることに成効した人間は、永い間に、何遍となくそうして色々な方面から日本の国に渡って来たであろう。それと同時に多種多様な民族の色々な文化の流れがこの極東の細長い島環国の中に合流し集注したであろう。従って我等の国語にはあらゆる民族の言語が混淆し融合してしまって、今となっては容易に分析することが出来ないようになってしまっているように思われる。我等の同胞の顔貌の中にはまたあらゆる人種の定型がそれぞれに標本的に洩れなく代表されているようである。</seg></p>
      <p style="text-indent: 1em" rend="first-line-indent(1)"><seg source="#source-1899-2019">日本人が真に日本の土の中から生れ、日本の言語が全く独立に発生したと考えるのは、</seg><ruby type="furigana" rend="right" source="#source-2019-2104"><rb><seg source="#source-2019-2022">孑</seg><g ref="#gaiji-4-2-5-87" source="#source-2022-2086">孒</g></rb><rt>ぼうふら</rt></ruby><seg source="#source-2104-2281">が水から発生すると考えるよりも一層非科学的である。同様に例えば日本の短歌の詩形が日本で始めて発生したものと速断するのも</seg><ruby type="furigana" rend="right" source="#source-2281-2302"><rb>所由</rb><rt>いわれ</rt></ruby><seg source="#source-2302-2343">のないことであろうと思う。</seg></p>
      <p style="text-indent: 1em" rend="first-line-indent(1)"><seg source="#source-2343-2723">五七五七七という音数律そのままのものは勿論現在では日本特有のものであろうが、この詩形の遠い先祖となるべきものが必ず何処かにあったであろうと想像し、その同じ先祖から出た他の家族が何処かにありはしなかったかと想像するのはそれほど唐突な空想とは思われない。</seg></p>
      <p>『古事記』に現われた色々の歌謡の音数排列を調べてみるとかなり複雑なものがあって到底容易には簡単な方則を見つけるわけに行かない。九、十、十一、十二、十四等の音から成る詩句が色々に重畳しているというだけしか分りかねる。ただこういうものからだんだんに現在の短歌型式が発生して来たであろうということは、これらの詩の中で五および七の音数から成るものが著しく多数であることから想像される。しかしこれも本当の統計的研究をした上でなければ確かな事は云われない。今ここで問題にしようというのは、『古事記』の中の古い歌謡から現在の短歌への進化の経路を追跡しようというのではなくて、反対にこれらの古い歌謡と先祖を同じくする遠い親類のようなものが何処か大陸にありはしないかということである。</p>
      <p style="text-indent: 1em" rend="first-line-indent(1)"><seg source="#source-3724-3772">こういう問題に対して自分は到底</seg><ruby type="furigana" rend="right" source="#source-3772-3796"><rb>喙</rb><rt>くちばし</rt></ruby><seg source="#source-3796-3927">を容れる資格のないものであるが、ただ手近な貧しい材料だけについて少しばかり考えてみる。</seg></p>
      <p style="text-indent: 1em" rend="first-line-indent(1)"><seg source="#source-3927-4271">漢詩の五言、七言の連続も、何かしらある遠い関係を思わせる。例えば李白の詩を見ても、一つの長詩の中に七言が続く中に五言が交じり、どうかすると、六言八言九言の交じることもある。四言詩の中に五言六言の句の混入することもあるのである。</seg></p>
      <p style="text-indent: 1em" rend="first-line-indent(1)"><seg source="#source-4271-4432">中央アジア東トルキスタン辺の歌謡を見ると勿論色々な型式があるが、中には八、五、八、五の型式がある。例えば</seg></p>

        <p style="text-indent: 1em" rend="first-line-indent(1)"><seg source="#source-4929-5255">サンスクリトの詩句にも色々の定型があるようであるが、十六綴音を一句とするものの連続が甚だ多いらしい。それを少し我儘な日本流に崩して読むと、十七、十四、十七、十四、とつまり短歌の連続のように読む事が可能である。例えば</seg></p>

        <p style="text-indent: 1em" rend="first-line-indent(1)"><seg source="#source-6308-6703">ギリシアのエピグラムの二行詩は形の上では何と云っても一番よく和歌に似ている。これも例えば長母音を勝手に二音に数えたり、重母音を自己流に分けたり合したりすると短歌と同じ口調に読めるものが多数にある。この場合は第二句の方が短いからなおさら都合がよいのである。例えば</seg></p>

        <p style="text-indent: 1em" rend="first-line-indent(1)"><seg source="#source-7119-7223">などは十二、五、七、七と切って読んでもさしつかえはなさそうである。</seg></p>
        <p style="text-indent: 1em" rend="first-line-indent(1)">「オリュンポスが馬を一匹くれるはずであったが、馬の代りに尻尾を一本くれた。その尻尾の端には最後の息をしている馬がぶら下がっていた」というので馬鹿気ているが、何処かしら古代日本人のユーモアとウィットを想わせるものがあると思う。以上のような読み方をするのはアカデミックな言語学者から見れば言語道断な乱暴な所業であるに相違ない。しかし古代の人間は文法も音韻方則も何も知らなかった。明治の日本人がステンショとかオーフルコートとか称したことを考え、昭和の吾々がビルジングとかブデンとか云っていることを考えればこれくらいはゆるしてもらってもいいであろう。</p>
        <p style="text-indent: 1em" rend="first-line-indent(1)"><seg source="#source-8041-8415">このような類似な詩形が諸所にあるのは偶然の一致かも知れない。人間の一と息に歌い得る綴音の数は、息の長さを一綴音の平均の長さで割れば得られる。それで、一綴音を明瞭に発音するに必要な時間に一定の制限があるとすれば、事柄はほぼ決定してしまうはずである。</seg></p>
        <p style="text-indent: 1em" rend="first-line-indent(1)"><seg source="#source-8415-9137">しかしまた一方でこれらの民族の間に昔から交通のあった事は事実である。ギリシア人と中央アジア並びにインド人と交渉のあったことは確かであり、後者とシナ人、シナ人と日本人とそれぞれの交通のあったことも間違いないとすれば、歌謡のごときものが全く相互沒交渉に別々に発達したと断定するのも少し危険なような気がするのである。それかと云ってこれらの関係を本式に研究するのはなかなか容易ならぬ難事業で、多数の専門家が永い年月を費やして始めていくらかでも明らかにし得る性質のものであろうと思われる。</seg></p>
