品川駅の近くに魔の踏切と云われている踏切がある。数年前、列車がその踏切にさしかかったところで、一方の闇から一人の青年がふらふらと線路の中へ入って来た。機関手は驚いて急停車してその青年を叱りつけた。

「前途のある青年が、何故そんなつまらんことをする」

すると、青年ははじめて夢から醒めたようになって、きょろきょろと四辺あたりを見まわしながら云った。

「それが不思議ですよ、ここまで来ると、このあたり一面に美麗な花が咲いてて、何とも云えない良い匂がするのです、それにそこには姝きれいな女がたくさんいて、それが何か唄いながら踊ってたのですが、それが私の方を見て、いっしょに踊らないかと云って招くものですから、ついその気になって、ふらふらと入ったのですよ」
