        <p style="text-indent: 1em" rend="first-line-indent(1)"><seg source="#source-739-1234">今日の純物理學界に於て，最も重きをなす世界人は Niels Bohr である．Planck 老い Einstein 衰へた今日，其右に出づるものは見當たらない．勿論各國共その國内に於ては色々の意味に於て權威者はある．又各專門に於てそれぞれの第一人者は存在する．然しこれ等の人々を一堂に集めた時，名實共に備はつた碩學を選んだとすれば，Bohr はその首位に推される人である．</seg></p>
        <p style="text-indent: 1em" rend="first-line-indent(1)"><seg source="#source-1234-2149">それは今日迄の Bohr の業績が，自然科學の最も深い基礎を左右する大飛躍であつたからである．從つて多くの科學は何等かの形でそのお蔭を蒙つて居る．否科學のみならず吾人の思想，觀念にも重大な影響を及ぼさうとして居るのである．その結果でもあり又本來の性格でもあるが，Bohr の關心は科學，哲學等の廣汎な範圍に亙つて居る．興味を惹かぬ領域の事は輕蔑するのが人の常である．その反作用としてその領域の人からは相談を持ちかけられない人となつてしまふ．Bohr は物理學以外に化學，生物學等の廣い範圍に同情と理解とがある．而かもそれが下手の横好きといふのではなく，問題の核心を把握する素質を備へて居るのであるから，誰しも敬畏する道理である．</seg></p>
        <p style="text-indent: 1em" rend="first-line-indent(1)"><seg source="#source-2149-2908">又 Bohr の學界に對する態度は，國の東西を問はず相提携して學術の進歩を念願として居るのである．それが爲にはあらゆる手段を講じて同僚後輩のために學術上，人事上の助力を惜まない．今日の新しい物理學を推進して居る多くの有爲な人々は，直接か間接か何かの機會に於て Bohr から教へられてゐる事が多い．殊に Copenhagen の Bohr の研究所に雲集する人々は，Heisenberg のいふ Kopenhagener Geist で以て仕込まれるのであつて，これが今日の物理學進展の一大原動力となつて居ることは否めない事實である．從つて Bohr が物理人欽仰の的となるのも當然であらう．</seg></p>
        <p style="text-indent: 1em" rend="first-line-indent(1)"><seg source="#source-2908-3066">又 Bohr の風格，人物，年齡などが，今日の Bohr の地位を築き上げるに與つて居ることも見逃がせないことである．</seg></p>

        <p style="text-indent: 1em" rend="first-line-indent(1)"><seg source="#source-3159-3603">Niels Hendrik David Bohr は1885年10月７日丁抹の首都 Copenhagen に生まれた．嚴父 Christian Bohr は同地の大學の生理學教授であつたが，特に物理學に興味を持ち，云はば純實驗物理學的の仕事をした人であるといふ．これが Bohr の將來に多大の影響を及ぼしたのはいふ迄もないことで，Bohr の天賦は此環境によつて延ばされた事であらう．</seg></p>
        <p style="text-indent: 1em" rend="first-line-indent(1)"><seg source="#source-3603-4015">殊に當時の大學の物理學教授 C. Christiansen と嚴父とは親友であつた．Bohr が1903年即ち數へ年19歳の時大學に入つて物理學を專攻することになつてから，Christiansen は Bohr を講義實驗の助手にしようとした．がそれは恐らく Bohr には所を得たものとは云へなかつたのであらう，１年位で止めになつて了つた．</seg></p>
        <p style="text-indent: 1em" rend="first-line-indent(1)"><seg source="#source-4015-4624">然し茲に Bohr の力量を示す機會が來た．それは Christiansen が自分の講義に關聯して，1905年に丁抹の學士院をして物理學の懸賞論文を募集させた事である．其の題目は“Rayleigh の液體 jet の定常振動の理論を用ひて表面張力を測定”せよといふのであつた．Bohr は此の問題に着手し，自宅（官舍）にあつた嚴父の實驗室で實驗を行つた．此實驗は一度始めると終る迄は止められなかつたので，夜おそく迄も續けなくてはならなかつたといふことである．</seg></p>
        <p style="text-indent: 1em" rend="first-line-indent(1)"><seg source="#source-4624-4790">論文は1906年10月に提出され，翌1907年には學士院から金牌が授けられた．此論文は London の Royal Society の Phil. Transaction (1909)</seg><hi rend="superscript" source="#source-4790-4838"><seg source="#source-4790-4796">(1)＊</seg></hi><seg source="#source-4838-5143">に發表せられたが，これが Bohr の唯一の實驗物理學に關する論文である．此頃は勿論その後も Bohr は實驗物理學者たることを志して居たやうであつたが，理論物理學における大きな業績は Bohr をそちらに掻つて行つて了つた．</seg></p>
        <p style="text-indent: 1em" rend="first-line-indent(1)"><seg source="#source-5143-5572">上述の論文を見て氣の付くことは，Bohr が其構想に於ても又技術に於ても，卓越した實驗物理學者であるといふことである．これは筆者も Bohr 教授の研究所に滯在中切實に感じたことであつて，同研究所から發表せられる實驗物理學の論文には，Bohr の着想又は理論的要素が多分に織り込まれて居るものなのである．</seg></p>
        <p style="text-indent: 1em" rend="first-line-indent(1)"><seg source="#source-5572-6042">更に此論文に表はれて居ることは，Bohr が學生の若さであり乍ら，既に發達した理論家であつたといふことである．即ち Rayleigh の理論は極めて小さい振幅の場合にだけ當てはまるものであるが，實際實驗の場合には有限の振幅のものを取扱ふのであるから，其影響を補正しなくてはならぬ．Bohr は此補正を導入して Rayleigh の理論を擴張して居る．</seg></p>
        <p style="text-indent: 1em" rend="first-line-indent(1)"><seg source="#source-6042-6703">かくて1909年には magister（學士）となり，1911年には“金屬の電子論”なる論文を提出して理學博士の學位を得た．此論文は丁抹語で書かれ他に發表されて居ないが，其内容は古典的電子論即ち Lorentz の電子論の見地よりして，金屬の諸性質を最も一般的に導き出さうと試みたものであつた．此論文に於ても其異常な天分がよく表はれて居り，殊に統計力學に堪能なことが解る．そして其結論としては，古典論的電子論の見地よりしては，物質の磁性は説明し得られないといふ事であつた．</seg></p>
        <p style="text-indent: 1em" rend="first-line-indent(1)"><seg source="#source-6703-7247">此結論は今日の量子論の立場から囘顧すると，極めて興味あることで，金屬の電氣傳導にせよ磁性にせよ，其頃既に古典論の行くべき所迄は行き盡して居たといふことが解る．そしてそれ以上は一つの新しい飛躍が必要であつたのである．Bohr は此事態を此論文により最も切實に體驗した譯であつて，これが古典論からみれば不合理と考へられる水素原子模型の提唱を敢行せしめた理由でもあらうか．</seg></p>
        <p style="text-indent: 1em" rend="first-line-indent(1)"><seg source="#source-7247-7591">金屬の電子論は，少くとも原理的には今日の量子論によつて解決せられたのであるが，此量子論たるや吾人の腦裡に終始一貫した因果的の描像を許さないものである．從つて Bohr の論文は吾人の描像的能力の極限に到達して居たものと考ふべきである．</seg></p>

        <p style="text-indent: 1em" rend="first-line-indent(1)"><seg source="#source-7838-8079">學位を受けてから間もなく Bohr は，英國に１箇年間の留學をすることになつた．そして最初は Cambridge の J. J. Thomson の許に，次いで Manchester の Rutherford の所に行つたのである．</seg></p>
        <p style="text-indent: 1em" rend="first-line-indent(1)"><seg source="#source-8079-8210">Cambridge では，帶電粒子が物質の通過に際して受ける速度の減衰について，理論的研究を行つた </seg><hi rend="superscript" source="#source-8210-8252"><seg source="#source-8210-8213">(4)</seg></hi><seg source="#source-8252-8327">．Bohr は２年後に再び此問題を取り上げて研究して居る </seg><hi rend="superscript" source="#source-8327-8371"><seg source="#source-8327-8331">(14)</seg></hi><seg source="#source-8371-9032">．これ等の結果はα粒子やβ粒子の物質通過に際するエネルギー損失の理論として今日に至る迄尊重せられて居る．そして20年後の今日になつて，量子力學の立場から Bethe や Bloch によつて研究せられたが，其結果は少くとも非相對性理論の範圍に於ては，大體に於て Bohr の結果と合致することが知れた．これは Bohr の勘の好さを示す一例であつて，古典論を以て量子力學の結果を豫知し得たものと云つて好いであらう．此事は次に述べる原子構造の理論に就いても同樣に云へることである．</seg></p>
        <p style="text-indent: 1em" rend="first-line-indent(1)"><seg source="#source-9032-9569">Cambridge を去つて Bohr は Manchester の Rutherford の所に遊學した．ここで Rutherford を知つたことは，Bohr の一生を支配する重大な意義をもつ事であつた．Rutherford は Bohr より14年の年長者であつたが，兩者の親交は Bohr に大きな支援，激勵，慰安を齎したのである．一昨年 Rutherford の薨去に際して Bohr の受けた心的打撃が如何に大であつたかは，筆者に寄せられた手紙によつても明かである．その一節に</seg></p>
        <p><hi rend="yokogumi horizontal" snh:layout-kind="yokogumi" snh:layout-params="direction=horizontal" source="#source-9569-9734"><seg source="#source-9587-9707">“To me Rutherford was not only the great master but a fatherly friend such as I shall hardly find in life any more.”</seg></hi></p>
        <p><seg source="#source-9736-9816">といふのがある．よく兩者の交りが表はれて居ると思ふ．</seg></p>
        <p style="text-indent: 1em" rend="first-line-indent(1)"><seg source="#source-9816-10160">Rutherford が Cavendish Laboratory の長として Cambridge に居た頃は，Bohr は大抵１年に一度か２年に二度海を渡つて Rutherford を訪問し，Cavendish Laboratory で講演したりなどして居た．現に筆者が初めて Bohr に會つたのは，1922年３月 Cavendish Laboratory に於てであつた．</seg></p>
        <p style="text-indent: 1em" rend="first-line-indent(1)"><seg source="#source-10160-10910">話が岐路に走つたが，Bohr が Manchester に行つた時は，恰度 Rutherford がα粒子の散亂に關する實驗結果からして，實驗的に長岡博士の模型即ち核原子の模型に到達し，これを提唱した直後であつた．此模型は周知の通り今日の原子構造論の礎石を置いたもので，惹いては現下の元素の人工變換に導いて行つたのである．今日から見ればこれは大して破天荒の着想とも考へられないかも知れないが，それは後からの話で，其頃物理學界を風靡して居た J. J. Thomson の模型，即ち陽電氣の雲塊の中に電子が浮かんで居るものに比べると，全く新しい洞察であつた．</seg></p>
        <p style="text-indent: 1em" rend="first-line-indent(1)"><seg source="#source-10910-11503">此核原子の模型によつて放射性元素の問題にも色々の曙光を認めた．此點に就ても先鞭を着けたのは Bohr であつたが，實をいふと Bohr の立場は更に高い所にあつた．即ち此模型の眞實性を確信し，これにより原子，分子の構造を明かにし，一般的物性の依て來る處を説明しようとするのであつて，放射性元素について其當時問題となつた事は其一端に過ぎなかつた．從つて滯英中これ等のことに就いては何の發表をもしないで歸國した．</seg></p>
        <p style="text-indent: 1em" rend="first-line-indent(1)"><seg source="#source-11503-12022">丁抹に歸つた冬即ち1912-1913年の冬の學期には，講師として講義をし乍ら此問題の研究に沒頭した．そして原子の出すスペクトルの究明に着手して茲に不朽の業績を樹てたのである．それは周知の通り前記の核原子模型に Planck の作用量子の假定を適用する事により，古典論では説明の付かなかつた水素の原子スペクトルを理論的に解いたのである．これは雜誌 Phil. Mag. 1913年７～11月號 </seg><hi rend="superscript" source="#source-12022-12076"><seg source="#source-12022-12031">(5)(6)(7)</seg></hi><seg source="#source-12076-12218"> に３囘に亙つて發表せられて居る．其骨子はよく知られて居る通り古典論では律し得ない二つの基礎假定</seg><hi rend="superscript" source="#source-12218-12260"><seg source="#source-12218-12221">＊</seg></hi><seg source="#source-12260-12361">にある．此假定は今日の量子論に於ても結果として其儘殘るものである．</seg></p>
        <p style="text-indent: 1em" rend="first-line-indent(1)"><seg source="#source-12361-13139">此 Bohr の原子論に就いて述ぶべき事が二つある．第一は其當時の理論は所謂古典的量子論であつて，原子の定常状態のエネルギーを算出するには古典論を用ひるが，定常状態の規定並に定常状態の間の遷移には，古典論と相容れない上述の二假定を用ひるのであるから，理論としては一貫性を缺いだ不滿足のものである．そして此二假定も今日の量子論からは自然に導き出されるものであるから，Bohr 理論は今日の量子論の生みの親であつたといふ歴史的價値以外には，理論としては最早今日何の價値もないものであるといふ議論を聞くが，これは妥當な見解とは云へない．</seg></p>
        <p style="text-indent: 1em" rend="first-line-indent(1)"><seg source="#source-13139-15089">勿論定量的の問題を解くに當つては，Bohr 理論は凡て今日の量子力學によつて置き代へらるべきであるといふことに異論はない．然し原子内の電子の行動について，吾人のもつて居る概念を用ひてこれを表現しようとすると，其一つの行き方として Bohr 理論に歸着することは避け得ないのである．勿論巨視的事象を通して形成せられた吾人の概念を，描像能力の極限を超えて居る原子，分子等の微視的對象に適用すると，行き詰りを生ずることがあつてもそれは止むを得ないことである．それが Bohr 理論の遭遇した運命であり，又前述の金屬の電子論に表はれた事態であつて，定量的の問題は描像能力の限界内にある古典論では解き得ず，描像を超脱した量子力學を必要としたのである．然し苟も描像を用ひるならば，其範圍内では Lorentz の古典論は正しい．それと同樣に原子なる對象を描像を用ひ得る古典論によつて表はすならば，Bohr 理論が一つの表現法なのである．只これでは描像は可能であるが，量的には不正確である．これを補ふために前記の假定を別に導入して量子力學と同一結果に達することを得たのである．即ち量子力學を知らずしてこれと一致する結果を得る同等の方法を見出したのであるから，前述の通り Bohr の勘の好さが窺はれるであらう．勿論此假定は既に描像の範圍を脱して居り，又これでも定量的には不充分であつて，結局理論を定量的に進めて行く量子力學が生れたのであるが，太陽系に似た模型を用ふる Bohr の概念は正しい．そして定常状態とか定常状態間の遷移などの考へは，その儘永く殘るものである．</seg></p>
        <p style="text-indent: 1em" rend="first-line-indent(1)"><seg source="#source-15089-15784">Bohr の理論は原子，分子の行動を表現する一方法であると云つたが，他の描像は何であるかと云へば，それは de Broglie の波動論である．即ち原子を一つの定常波として取扱ふのである．此波動も古典論に從ふ波動でないことは，Bohr 理論に於ける電子が古典論に從ふ粒子でないことと對應して居つて，de Broglie 理論に於ても定量的に問題を取扱ふには，やはり波動場の量子論を必要とするのである．此點では Bohr 理論と同樣描像の限界内にあるものであるから，その範圍を超えた問題についてはやはり無力である．</seg></p>
        <p style="text-indent: 1em" rend="first-line-indent(1)"><seg source="#source-15784-16295">第二に Bohr 理論に就いて述ぶべきことは，水素原子の定常状態のエネルギー値が，古典量子論によるものと今日の量子力學によるものとが定量的に一致することである．これは Coulomb 法則の場合に起る偶然の一致であつて，帶電粒子の衝突の問題に於て，古典論と量子力學とが共に Rutherford 式に達すると同樣である．Coulomb 以外の法則では恐らく必ずしも一致しないであらう．</seg></p>
        <p style="text-indent: 1em" rend="first-line-indent(1)"><seg source="#source-16295-16803">此偶然の一致は量子論の進歩の爲に，一面幸であり又一面不幸であつたと云へるかも知れない．幸といふのは，此一致の爲に，Bohr は後に述べる對應原理（correspondence principle）を樹立し，これに從つて原子構造論，スペクトル論などを進めて行つて，量子力學の誕生前既にその結果を豫知して居た．若し此一致がなかつたならば，こんな進歩は恐らく著しく遲れたであらう．</seg></p>
        <p style="text-indent: 1em" rend="first-line-indent(1)"><seg source="#source-16803-17789">然し一面から云ふと，此一致があつた爲に古典論の力を過信した傾きがなかつたとも云へない．殊に Sommerfeld の微細構造の理論等が，之も偶然の一致から實驗に合ふ結果を示したので，其當時の人は古典論は原子，分子にも定量的に適用し得るといふ誤信を抱くものもあつた．之が爲に今日の量子力學の發見が或は多少遲れたかも知れない．然し又一旦之が發見せられると其進展の驚くべく迅速であつたのは，古典論の適用によつて嘗めさせられた經驗の苦さ，及び前述の通り古典量子論によつて形成せられた正しい背景が與つて力あつたと思へば，これも結局は幸であつたといふべきであらう．殊に何の手掛りもなくては量子力學も發見が困難であつたらうから，つまり今日の量子論は行くべき道を進んだと考ふべきである．</seg></p>
        <p><hi rend="superscript" source="#source-17789-17831"><seg source="#source-17789-17792">＊</seg></hi><seg source="#source-17831-18205">（Ａ）原子内の電子の運動状態は，或る條件で規定せられる所謂定常状態のみが許される．そして此状態は不思議な安定度を有つて居つて，電子が其運動状態を變へる場合には，必ず一つの定常状態から他のものに移り，如何なる作用があつても其中間の状態にはあり得ない．</seg></p>

        <p style="text-indent: 1em" rend="first-line-indent(1)"><seg source="#source-18691-19329">1913年の夏 Bohr は Christiansen の後をついだ Knudsen の後任として大學物理學科の助教授（Docent）となつた．此講座では醫學部の學生に物理學初歩を教へるのであつたが，之はあまり有難い仕事ではなかつた．然し夫は１年丈で濟んだ．といふのは1914年には Manchester の Rutherford の所へ，物理の講師として呼ばれたからである．當時歐州大戰が勃發したが同年10月には英國に渡り，２年間 Manchester に滯在した．其間1915年には前記スペクトルと原子構造の研究の繼續結果を發表した </seg><hi rend="superscript" source="#source-19329-19381"><seg source="#source-19329-19337">(11)(13)</seg></hi><seg source="#source-19381-19386">．</seg></p>
        <p style="text-indent: 1em" rend="first-line-indent(1)"><seg source="#source-19386-19799">1916年には Copenhagen 大學に Bohr の爲に理論物理の講座が設けられ其教授に任ぜられた．そして此講座にはやはり前記の醫學部學生への講義が付き纏つて居たのであるが，1916年夏歸國するや代講者を置くことを許され，又1918年には別に此講義の講師が置かれることになつて，全く惡縁を切ることになつた．</seg></p>
        <p style="text-indent: 1em" rend="first-line-indent(1)"><seg source="#source-19799-20425">Bohr は就任後直ちに，此講座に附屬する理論物理學研究所の建設を大學當局に提議した．其内容は圖書室，講義室並に理論物理學研究に必要な設備，又理論物理學研究結果の檢討並に理論發展の手引きをすべき，實驗研究を行ふための器械裝置及び工作場を設けることであつた．此建議は大學當局，政府，議會を簡單に通過した．それは此敷地が有志者の寄附（８萬クローネ即ち現在の８萬圓）によつて，市の東北 Blegdamsvej に購入することが決つたからである．</seg></p>
        <p style="text-indent: 1em" rend="first-line-indent(1)"><seg source="#source-20425-21189">此建築は1918-1919年の冬に始められ，1921年３月３日大學理論物理學研究所（Universitetets Institute for teoretisk Fysik）として開所せられた．此建物は約15間×７間位で，半地下室は物理實驗室及び工作場に用ひられ，その上の階が講義室，圖書室並に理論の方の人の居室，及び化學實驗室になつて居り，二階は Bohr 教授一家の住居となつて居た．此研究所の完成により外國の若い理論並に實驗物理學者が次から次へと集つて來た．我國の學者で此處で研究した人も10人近くある．Bohr 教授は日本の留學生に對しては非常に好意を寄せられ，皆愉快に研究に沒頭することが出來た</seg><hi rend="superscript" source="#source-21189-21231"><seg source="#source-21189-21192">＊</seg></hi><seg source="#source-21231-21236">．</seg></p>
        <p style="text-indent: 1em" rend="first-line-indent(1)"><seg source="#source-21236-21645">此研究所に最初に來た物理學者は和蘭の Kramers で，助手並に講師として10年近くも滯在したやうである．Kramers が Utrecht に去つた後任は Heisenberg であつたが，其任期は２箇年位であつたらう．Heisenberg が Leipzig に行つた後を O. Klein が繼ぎ，３～４年の後 Klein が Stockholm に去つて暫くは空席であつたのを，</seg><app type="base-text-variant" source="#source-21658-21720"><lem><seg source="#source-21648-21655">Møller</seg></lem><rdg type="base-text"><seg source="#source-21704-21711">Móller</seg></rdg></app><seg source="#source-21720-21887">が引き繼いで今日に至つて居る．此外に Rosenfeld も既に數年間助手として滯在して居るやうである．之等の助手の中丁抹人は</seg><app type="base-text-variant" source="#source-21900-21962"><lem><seg source="#source-21890-21897">Møller</seg></lem><rdg type="base-text"><seg source="#source-21946-21953">Móller</seg></rdg></app><seg source="#source-21962-22492">１人で，他は皆外國人である．此研究所の空氣が如何に cosmopolitan であるかが解るであらう．又 Hevesy は Manchester 以來 Bohr の親友であつて，中途獨逸の Freiburg に教授として赴任して居た數年を除いては，殆ど最初から此研究所で研究を行ひ，後に述べる元素 Hf の發見後，其化學的研究並に分離を行つた．人工放射能の發見と共に今日では專ら生物學の研究に沒頭し，大切な仕事を出して居る．</seg></p>
        <p style="text-indent: 1em" rend="first-line-indent(1)"><seg source="#source-22492-23031">此外 Pauli, Dirac, Jordan, Slater, Urey（重水發見者）, Gamow, Heitler, Nordheim, Hund, Bloch, Goudsmit, Weizsäcker, Coster, Kopfermann 其他今日物理學界に名を知られて居る人の大半は，長いか短いか此研究所に居つた經驗をもつて居るのである．從つて此研究所は20世紀前半の物理學史上，直接間接に不朽の貢獻をしたものであつて，誰か此研究所の歴史を書き殘して置くことは後日の爲大切なことであらう思はれる．</seg></p>
        <p style="text-indent: 1em" rend="first-line-indent(1)"><seg source="#source-23031-23298">1931年に此研究所は創立10年記念を祝つた．其際此研究所から發表せられた全部の論文の別刷を集めて一冊とし，これを Bohr 教授に贈呈した．論文の數は約275あつたといふことである．此目録は雜誌</seg><hi rend="yokogumi horizontal" snh:layout-kind="yokogumi" snh:layout-params="direction=horizontal" source="#source-23298-23372"><seg source="#source-23316-23345">‘Fysisk Tidsskrift’(1931)</seg></hi><seg source="#source-23372-23393"> に出て居る．</seg></p>
        <p style="text-indent: 1em" rend="first-line-indent(1)"><seg source="#source-23393-24108">其後此研究所も次第に手狹くなつて居たが，1923年に米國の Rockfeller Foundation から４萬弗援助を得て擴張を行つた．敷地は Copenhagen 市より寄附することになり，經常費は政府が出し，又丁抹ビール會社 Carlsberg の設立した Carlsberg Foundation も多額の寄附をしたので，研究所の擴張として1925年に先づ Bohr 教授の官舍が隣に新築せられて一家はこれに移られた．そして元の住宅であつた二階は理論の方の人が使ふことになり，又別に工作場と實驗室とを含む１棟が増築せられた．實驗の方の助手 Jacobsen は初め此處で仕事をして居つた．</seg></p>
        <p style="text-indent: 1em" rend="first-line-indent(1)"><seg source="#source-24108-24536">其後 Bohr 教授一家は，前述の Carlsberg 會社の社長 Jacobsen が學者の爲に寄贈した壯大な邸宅に移られた．それはもう７年前の事である．此邸宅に住む人は丁抹隨一の學者で，同國の學士院が推薦することになつて居る．最初これに住まつたのは哲學者Hóffdingで，其沒後 Bohr 教授一家がこれを承け繼いだのである．</seg></p>
        <p style="text-indent: 1em" rend="first-line-indent(1)"><seg source="#source-24536-25632">最近原子核物理學が盛んとなつたので，Bohr の研究所にも此方面の實驗設備が整へられることになつた．Rockfeller Foundation 及び實業會社方面の寄附によつて，200萬ヴォルトの高電壓電源が建設せられ，且つ丁抹の人である Poulsen の電弧發振器に用ひられて居た，65瓲の電磁石を改造してサイクロトロンが作られつつある．之等を容れるために研究所の建物が増設せられたのは云ふ迄もない事である．これで原子核の問題，生物學の研究が著しく推進せられることと豫期せられる．これ迄此方面の研究は，同地のラヂウム研究所のラヂウム，及び Bohr 教授の50歳の誕生日を祝つて友人たちの贈つた 500mg のラヂウムによつて居たのである．以上で明かなやうに，名は理論物理學研究所であるが，實驗方面に於ても常に世界の第一線に立つやうな設備が整へられて居る．これが結局理論を進める重要な手段なのである．</seg></p>

        <p style="text-indent: 1em" rend="first-line-indent(1)"><seg source="#source-25966-26378">Bohr は水素原子の理論を提唱した最初から，量子論に沒頭しながらも古典論から目を離さなかつた．否寧ろ古典論の結果を出來るだけ量子論に利用して其發展を企てたのである．そして此兩者の間には不離不即ともいふべき一種の對應の存在することに氣付いて居た．これを Bohr は對應原理と名付けた．</seg></p>
        <p style="text-indent: 1em" rend="first-line-indent(1)"><seg source="#source-26378-27213">例へば量子數の大きい極限に於ては，Bohr 理論と古典論とは其結果に於て一致する．勿論これは結果だけであつて其物理的解釋は全く異つて居る．例へば原子が光を出す場合に於ても，量子論では一つの素過程に於て單一の振動數を有する光量子を放出する．そして異つた素過程の集合した結果多くの振動數をもつ光を出すのである．所が古典論では帶電粒子が軌道運動をすれば，同時に多くの振動數をもつた光を出すことになる．此兩者の結果は一般には一致しないが，量子數の大きい極限に於ては同じことになる．これからして Bohr は量子論が古典論を一般化したものであるといふ考へを夙くから抱いて居つた．</seg></p>
        <p style="text-indent: 1em" rend="first-line-indent(1)"><seg source="#source-27213-27573">又原子に於て Bohr の二假定に從つて輻射される光の強度と，それに關聯した定常状態に於ける電子の運動の Fourier 展開係數とが，特別の場合には古典論に從ふ關係をもつことを指摘した．これは其後 Kramers によつて Stark 效果の場合に適用して詳細に研究せられた．</seg></p>
        <p style="text-indent: 1em" rend="first-line-indent(1)"><seg source="#source-27573-27989">古典量子論を原子，分子の問題に直接適用出來ないことは，其後次第に明かになつて來た．こんな場合にも Bohr は古典論との對應を追究することによつて，問題を解く端緒を得て行つたのであつて，云はば對應原理は闇夜の燈火であつた．これ等の點を最もよく論述したのは丁抹の學士院の報文として1918年 </seg><hi rend="superscript" source="#source-27989-28041"><seg source="#source-27989-27997">(15)(16)</seg></hi><seg source="#source-28041-28056"> 並に1922年 </seg><hi rend="superscript" source="#source-28056-28100"><seg source="#source-28056-28060">(26)</seg></hi><seg source="#source-28100-28242"> に發表せられた３論文である．之は量子力學の發見以前は，量子論の基礎假定に關する1923～1924年の論文 </seg><hi rend="superscript" source="#source-28242-28294"><seg source="#source-28242-28250">(34)(35)</seg></hi><seg source="#source-28294-28372"> と共に，量子論の教書のやうに考へられたものである．</seg></p>
        <p style="text-indent: 1em" rend="first-line-indent(1)"><seg source="#source-28372-28851">Bohr は對應原理を指針として，元素の週期律を原子構造の立場から解明しようと試みた．それには各元素の裸の原子核が，電子を１箇宛捕捉して行く時に生ずるスペクトルを理論的に攻究し，それとＸ線スペクトル並に原子スペクトルに關する實驗結果とを照し合せ，又他の諸性質をも參考として各元素の原子構造を明かにした．そしてその結果を初めて</seg><hi rend="yokogumi horizontal" snh:layout-kind="yokogumi" snh:layout-params="direction=horizontal" source="#source-28851-28969"><seg source="#source-28869-28898">‘Fysisk Tidsskrift’(1921)</seg><hi rend="superscript" source="#source-28898-28942"><seg source="#source-28898-28902">(22)</seg></hi></hi><seg source="#source-28969-28989">に發表した．</seg></p>
        <p style="text-indent: 1em" rend="first-line-indent(1)"><seg source="#source-28989-29843">これによつて各原子の構造が解ると共に，逆に此結果から未發見の元素の性質が豫告し得るやうになつた．Hevesy，Coster の72番の元素 Hf の發見は，これに基いてジルコン鑛石の中を探索した結果であつて，Bohr 理論の大きな應用の一つである．Bohr は1922年12月のノーベル授賞式の講演に於て，この發見を最初に發表したのであつた．これより先佛國の Urbain は此72番の元素を稀土類の中に發見したと云ひ，これを Celtium と名付けて居たのであるが，Bohr の理論によれば，之は稀土類に屬さぬものであることが明かであつて，此發見に就いては Urbain と Hevesy，Coster との間に論爭を生じたが，今日では Celtium なる名は消滅したやうである．</seg></p>
        <p style="text-indent: 1em" rend="first-line-indent(1)"><seg source="#source-29843-30246">Bohr の原子構造論は其後 Main-Smith 並に Stoner によつて多少改められたが，ともかく今日の量子力學と Pauli の原理とからして得られる結果と少しも異る所はない．今日から見ると對應原理を唯一の信條として，よくも此處迄漕ぎ付け得られたものと思はれる．これも Bohr の勘の好さによるのである．</seg></p>
        <p style="text-indent: 1em" rend="first-line-indent(1)"><seg source="#source-30246-30713">此勘の好いといふことが何であるかは，言葉その物の本來の意味の示すやうに，これを解説することは出來ないが，人が一つの問題に沒入すると，これに同化融合し，人と自然とが一體になり，自然の根柢を支配する深い法則に觸れるやうになるのではないかといふやうな氣がする．これは Bohr 教授に接したものの受ける印象ではなからうか．</seg></p>
        <p style="text-indent: 1em" rend="first-line-indent(1)"><seg source="#source-30713-31061">Bohr の原子構造の研究が完成した頃から，對應原理を指針とする古典量子論の無力さが次第に表面に現はれて來た．殊に光の波動説と粒子説（光量子説）との矛盾が，人に甚だしい不滿の念を抱かせた．此點に橋をかけるために Bohr-Kramers-Slater の理論が出た </seg><hi rend="superscript" source="#source-31061-31113"><seg source="#source-31061-31069">(37)(38)</seg></hi><seg source="#source-31113-31802">．これはエネルギー，運動量の不滅法則が素過程には行はれないで，ただ統計的にのみ成り立つものであるといふ考へを用ひ，波動と粒子とを結ぶ試みであつた．此説は Geiger-Bothe，Compton-Simons の實驗によつて誤であることが明かにせられ，Bohr 自身も既に其前に熱力學的考察からこれは誤つて居ることを覺つて居た．今日から見ればこれは明白であるが當時としてはそんなに簡單ではなく，殊に Bohr は個々の電子，原子などの行動が，こんなに迄立ち入つて檢討せられるものとは考へて居なかつたやうである．</seg></p>
        <p style="text-indent: 1em" rend="first-line-indent(1)"><seg source="#source-31802-32491">此 Bohr の考へは誤ではあつたが，今日から見て興味あることは，今の量子論ではこれと同樣な考へ方が，時間空間の問題に採用せられて居るといふことである．即ち個々の光量子や電子の時間空間に於ける傳播，運動は，これを豫知することは出來ない．只統計的にのみこれを規定し得るものである．即ち Bohr-Kramers-Slater の考へ方は，これをエネルギー，運動量に適用せずして，それと正規共軛の關係にある時間，空間に適用すればよかつたのであつた．こんなことは後から考へると眞に紙一重の差である．</seg></p>
        <p style="text-indent: 1em" rend="first-line-indent(1)"><seg source="#source-32491-33394">對應原理の無力を示す事象は，その他色々出て來たが，その中でも Ramsauer 效果及び多重スペクトルなどは著しいものであつた．前者は結局量子力學の發見によつて始めて解かれた問題であるが，後者は電子のスピンによつてその前に闡明せられたのである．此スピンの發見は Goudsmit，Uhlenbeck の二人によつて指摘せられたものである．Bohr は始め雜誌 Naturwiss. に出た兩人の寄書を見落して居たのであるが英國に行つた途中和蘭に立ち寄つて此話を聞き，速座に其考への正しいことを洞察し，歸國後早速 Goudsmit を Copenhagen に招き，連日の討議によつて今日のスピン模型の理論が確立せられたのであつた．此論議に於て２なる値をもつ係數を Thomas が計算したのであつた．</seg></p>
        <p style="text-indent: 1em" rend="first-line-indent(1)"><seg source="#source-33394-33637">此話は Bohr が如何に學術の進歩を促すに熱心であるかを示す一例である．これによつて八方塞がりの量子論も稍愁眉を開いたのであるが，然し眞の展開はそれから後の事であつた</seg><hi rend="superscript" source="#source-33637-33679"><seg source="#source-33637-33640">＊</seg></hi><seg source="#source-33679-33684">．</seg></p>

        <p style="text-indent: 1em" rend="first-line-indent(1)"><seg source="#source-34075-34533">それは Heisenberg の量子力學の發見によつて始まつた．此着想は1925年の春 Heisenberg が病を避けるため Heligoland の島に居た時得たものである．そして島から下りて來る途中 Hamburg に居た Pauli に此話をした所が，Pauli は直ぐ贊意を表したので之を書いて雜誌 Zeitschrift für Physik に送つた．之が所謂 Pauli の“裁許”（sanction）の一例である．</seg></p>
        <p style="text-indent: 1em" rend="first-line-indent(1)"><seg source="#source-34533-35173">Heisenberg は是以前に Copenhagen に來たことがあるから對應原理の眞髓に徹して居た．殊に Kramers と共に光の分散に關する量子論の研究を行つて，その精神に曉通して居たのである．此分散の研究は量子力學發見の先驅であつた．要するに Heisenberg の理論は Bohr の對應原理を數學的の形式によつて體現したものであつて，之によつて對應原理は其使命を果したものと云つて好いであらう．そして古典論と量子論との對應は一目瞭然，しかも定量的に規定せられるやうになつた．</seg></p>
        <p style="text-indent: 1em" rend="first-line-indent(1)"><seg source="#source-35173-35758">これより先に de Broglie の物質波動説は提唱せられて居たのであるが，Schrödinger がこれに數學的の形を與へ，所謂波動力學を樹ててから一般の注意を惹くやうになつたのである．Schrödinger の理論は de Broglie 波を表現するものであると同時に，Heisenberg の意味での量子力學に於ける，最も有力な數學的武器である事が後から解つて來て，今迄堰き止められて居た水が，一時に奔流するやうな勢で凡ての問題が解かれて行つた．</seg></p>
        <p style="text-indent: 1em" rend="first-line-indent(1)"><seg source="#source-35758-36093">これで知れるやうに量子力學の發見には，直接に Bohr の手で行はれた部分はない．然し直接間接にこれを生み出す機運を誘致し，又其下にある Copenhagen 學徒の中から發見者並に推進者を出したのであるから，其生みの親と云つても好いであらう．</seg></p>

        <p style="text-indent: 1em" rend="first-line-indent(1)"><seg source="#source-36263-36427">量子力學の威力が至る所に發揮せられている頃，Heisenberg は其物理的内容の闡明について深い研究を行ひ，不確定性原理</seg><hi rend="superscript" source="#source-36427-36475"><seg source="#source-36427-36433">＊＊</seg></hi><seg source="#source-36475-36914">を誘導した．これは Hamilton の所謂正規共軛の二つの量を同時に測定する場合，その各の平均の測定誤差の積は，Planck の常數 h よりは小さくし得ないといふ原理である．これは測定器の不正確に基因するものではなく，量子論的の量に固有の原則的制限であつて，これ以上の正確度を云爲するのは意味の無いことなのである．</seg></p>
        <p style="text-indent: 1em" rend="first-line-indent(1)"><seg source="#source-36914-36976">Bohr は之と類似の考へを前から抱いて居つて</seg><hi rend="superscript" source="#source-36976-37030"><seg source="#source-36976-36985">＊＊＊</seg></hi><seg source="#source-37030-38126">，やはり其頃此考察を行つて居たのであるが，Heisenberg の此原理の發表後更に其核心を把握する研究に沒頭した．その結果として Heisenberg の思考實驗中の行論を訂正し，進んで此不確定性原理の因つて來る所を明かにした．即ち對象に對し正規共軛の二つの量の一方を測定する實驗を行ふと，量子論的實在にあつては其實驗の爲に無視し得ない影響を他方の量に與へることを避け得ない．その上にその影響の大さは，光及び電子が量子論に從ふ實在である爲に，原則的に正確に求め得ないもので，從つて古典論の場合のやうに補正を行ふといふことが出來ない．云ひ換へれば觀測に於て，觀測體と被觀測體とが古典論の場合のやうに截然たる區別をつけられないといふ事態にあることに基因するのである．これは Bohr のいふやうに，心理學に於て主觀と客觀とが判然と區別し得ないことに類似して居るのである．</seg></p>
        <p style="text-indent: 1em" rend="first-line-indent(1)"><seg source="#source-38126-38847">不確定性原理に從へば，正規共軛の二つの量の一方を非常に正確に求める實驗を行ふと，他方の量は全く解らなくなつて了ふ．かやうに量子論に於ては半面的の事態が至る所に存在して居る．Bohr はこれを相補性（Complementarity）と名付け，量子論のことを相補性理論と唱へて居る．これは相對性理論に對應する名前である．以上のことで解るやうに，量子論の領域に於ては，觀測の仕方によつて現象が規定せられる．觀測に無關係に實在する現象はない．これはよく言はれる“物は觀方による”といふ言葉で表はして好いであらう．</seg></p>
        <p style="text-indent: 1em" rend="first-line-indent(1)"><seg source="#source-38847-40537">de Broglie の物質波動説が實驗的基礎を得るやうになつてからは，光に於ける波動説と粒子説との論爭が，物質にも飛び火がした．光に於て此兩者の調整に失敗した Bohr が此事態に最も關心を深めたのも當然である．そして相補性の考察を進めてこれを解決した．即ちこれ等の波動説とか粒子説とかの基礎となる實驗事實を檢べて見ると，波動説の場合には時間空間に於ける傳播，運動が問題となり，粒子説の現はれるのはエネルギー，運動量が當面の問題となつた時である．そして一方が問題となつて居る時は他方は自然に姿を消して了ふ．此兩者は前述の通り互に正規共軛の量であるから互に相補の關係にある．從つて時間空間の問題に於て波動性が現はれエネルギー，運動量の問題に於て粒子性が現はれるといふことは，つまり別々の實驗の結果を，古典論によつて抽象せられた波動とか粒子とかいふ概念によつて解釋して居ることであつて，何等矛盾ではない．即ち五感を通して得た古典的概念によつて，光とか電子とかいふ五感を超越した實在を律しようとすると，相補性に從つて其半面だけが把握せられるのものであつて，それが別々の實驗である以上矛盾ではない．寧ろ古典的概念の本質として半面しか表はし得ないといふのが量子論から云へば當然なのである．これで世紀に亙る波動説と粒子説との論爭も結末を告げることになつた．</seg></p>
        <p style="text-indent: 1em" rend="first-line-indent(1)"><seg source="#source-40537-41418">所で量子力學の數式の解釋によると，光又は電子等の時間空間の傳播，運動の問題では確率が與へられるだけで，古典論のやうに個々の過程に於て因果律は成立しない．確率が與へられる結果として，因果律の成立するのは多くのものの統計的結果に對してだけである．此事は Heisenberg の不確定性原理から云つても，古典的因果律に反するものではない．といふのは古典的因果律が成立する爲には時間，空間，エネルギー，運動量の數値が全部正確に與へられる必要がある．所が不確定性原理に從へば，それは不可能なことなのであるから，事が因果的に運ばないのは寧ろ當然である．即ち量子論は古典的因果律を適用すべき範圍ではないのである．</seg></p>
        <p style="text-indent: 1em" rend="first-line-indent(1)"><seg source="#source-41418-41888">そして統計的の結果は，量子力學の示す所によれば波動の形を採るものであるから，多くの光量子，多くの電子の體系が波動性を示すことになつて來る．之に反してエネルギー，運動量は量子力學にあつても，個々の過程に於て其不滅則の成立することが示される．從つて不滅則の關する限り個々の過程に於て古典的因果律が成立するのである．</seg></p>
        <p style="text-indent: 1em" rend="first-line-indent(1)"><seg source="#source-41888-42793">以上の結論として時間空間の問題に於ては古典的因果律は成立せず，且つエネルギー，運動量は問題の表面に現はれて來ない．これに反しエネルギー，運動量の問題に於ては因果律は成立するが，時間空間の問題は全く不明である．古典論に於ては時間空間の問題が因果的に記述せられたのであるが，量子論に於てはこれが兩立せず，只一方だけが當面の問題となるもので，而かも二つの半面が全實在を構成し，極限に於ては合して古典論となることからして相補性の名が生れたのである．そして此相補の關係にある二つの半面は互に排除的であつて，一方が問題となる時は他方は隱れて了ふものなのである．これを Heisenberg の不確定性原理が數學的に表はして居る．</seg></p>
        <p style="text-indent: 1em" rend="first-line-indent(1)"><seg source="#source-42793-43359">量子論の此半面性乃至は古典的因果律の不成立といふことは，人によつては甚だ不滿足であると考へて居るやうであるが，これは吾人の抱く物理的觀念の本質として止むを得ぬ事態である．吾人の觀念は巨視的事象から抽象せられたものであつて，それを微視的實在に適用するから此やうな事態に立ち至るのである．而かもこれは古典論の極めて自然な擴張と見らるべきものであるから，寧ろ滿足すべきものである．</seg></p>
        <p style="text-indent: 1em" rend="first-line-indent(1)"><seg source="#source-43359-44066">ところが人によつては吾人の古典的觀念を捨てて，何か新しい觀念を用ひれば，半面性並に古典的因果律の不成立が避け得られるであらうと考へるやうであるが，之は全くの誤であつて，吾人の物理的觀念なるものは巨視的世界に於ける事象を經て形成せられるより外に方法はないのであるから，今日の結果は極めて順調にして正當な發展と見るべきである．吾人のもつ觀念，例へば時間とか位置とか，又エネルギーとか運動量などを適用する限りは，どうしても個々の運動は確率で規定せられるより外はないのである．</seg></p>

        <p style="text-indent: 1em" rend="first-line-indent(1)"><seg source="#source-44887-46014">宇宙を構成する物質の窮極世界に行はれる法則が，生物現象又は精神現象と一脈相通ずる所があるのは，孰れも廣い意味に於ける自然現象の一面であるといふ見方から云へば，或は當然かも知れないが眞に興味あることである．そして前にも述べたやうに，物質の究極に達する Bohr の勘は，生物界乃至は精神界にも通じたのである．それは相補性なる事態が，物質以外の他の世界にもあることを指摘したことである．勿論今日の所ではそれは單なる類推に過ぎないで，その間には何の因果的關係も存在しない．從つて目下の所では，單純なる物理學の事態から推して複雜なる他の領域の問題の理解を易からしめ，又果てしなき無用の論爭を避けて新しい見方を教へるといふに止つて居る．然しこれ等類推の裏には，更に深く且つ廣い共通の基礎が横はつて居るのかも知れない．これは恐らく遠い將來の研究に俟つべき問題であらう．</seg></p>
        <p style="text-indent: 1em" rend="first-line-indent(1)"><seg source="#source-46014-46365">それは兎も角，Bohr は生命と今日の原子物理學的方法とが互に相補の關係にあること，從つて生命は物理學的には解けぬ實在として取扱ふべきものであること，恰も Planck の作用量子が古典論では解けぬ實在として扱はれると同樣であることを先づ指摘した．</seg></p>
        <p style="text-indent: 1em" rend="first-line-indent(1)"><seg source="#source-46365-47408">心理學に於ても同樣の事態が存在する．例へば自己の心理現象を觀察することは，その心理現象その物とは互に相補の關係にあつて，觀察のために現象が變化する．自由意志の存在が因果的に説明出來ないのは，やはり自己の意思の觀察に於て，既述の通り主觀と客觀とが互に作用して分けられないからであつて，これは恰度量子論に於て凡ての量が同時に觀測出來ないから因果的の記述が出來ないのと同樣である．又生物學に於て，生命現象を原子物理學的に記述出來ないのも類似の事態によるのであつて，生物體は新陳代謝が行はれて居る爲に，これを原子物理學的に規定することが出來ない．即ちどれだけの原子が其生物に屬し，又どれだけが生物體外のものであるかが決められない．規定することが出來なければ原子物理學を適用する手掛りを失ふわけである．</seg></p>
        <p style="text-indent: 1em" rend="first-line-indent(1)"><seg source="#source-47408-47638">又思想と感情，理性と本能といふ對立的心理現象の存在も互に相補の關係にあつて，一方の存在する所他方が隱れて了ふのは，自己觀察の特性の然らしむる所である．</seg></p>
        <p style="text-indent: 1em" rend="first-line-indent(1)"><seg source="#source-47638-48141">吾人の用ふる言葉そのものも，その分析と適用とが相補關係にあつて，言葉を分析し定義すると使へなくなつて了ふ．これを定義しないで漠然たる所に適用の餘地が出來てくるのである．又事物の形式と内容とも相補の關係にあつて，内容なくして形式はないが，内容を餘り分析すると形式は無くなつて了ふ．尚此形式と内容とについては Bohr は次のやうに云つて居る．</seg></p>

        <p style="text-indent: 1em" rend="first-line-indent(1)"><seg source="#source-48697-49211">原子核の理論に於ける Bohr の業績も影響の及ぶ所が大きい．それは中性子の捕獲の問題から這入つて行つて所謂 Bohr の液滴模型を提唱した．それは核の構成粒子間の相互作用が大きい爲に，これを核外電子のやうに一體問題にして解くことが出來ぬことを高調し，中性子捕獲の共鳴作用，其際生ずるγ線，又多くの粒子の放出作用等について，古典的模型を用ひて考察を進めた．</seg></p>
        <p style="text-indent: 1em" rend="first-line-indent(1)"><seg source="#source-49211-49548">此考察の結果は實驗の進むにつれて次第に實證せられて行きつつある．そして立入つた定量的の研究は Kalckar と共著で一昨年最初の論文を發表し，次いで行はれた研究が發表せられる豫定であつたが，Kalckar の急逝で其後どうなつたかと思はれる．</seg></p>
        <p style="text-indent: 1em" rend="first-line-indent(1)"><seg source="#source-49548-49749">最近はγ線による原子核の光電效果的崩壞について考察を廻らせ，何故にγ線による變換が元素により選擇的に共鳴作用を現はすかを論じて居る．</seg></p>
        <p style="text-indent: 1em" rend="first-line-indent(1)"><seg source="#source-49749-49940">これ等の研究は今後更に興味ある發展を示すであらう．それと共にかやうな模型を微視的に取扱ふ方法が見出されることを希望して居る．</seg></p>
        <p style="text-indent: 1em" rend="first-line-indent(1)"><seg source="#source-49940-50220">尚序に一言すべきは，Gamow がα崩壞の理論を提唱して間もなく Copenhagen に來て其話をした所が，Bohr は速座に其正しいことを認めてこれを激勵した．その後 Gamow は長く Copenhagen に居つて好い仕事を殘した．</seg></p>

        <p style="text-indent: 1em" rend="first-line-indent(1)"><seg source="#source-50335-50727">Bohr は歐米各國の大學，學士院，學會などから名譽學位を與へられ，名譽會員に推され，又賞牌などは數知れず授けられて居る．1921年のノーベル物理學賞は其一である．又歐洲の各國で開かれた物理學の會議には，よく出席して講演に討論に其抱負見解を述べ，指導的影響を與へて居る．</seg></p>
        <p style="text-indent: 1em" rend="first-line-indent(1)"><seg source="#source-50727-51022">米國には既に４囘も招聘せられ，各地で講演討論を行ひ，其結果は何か新しい發展を米國の物理學會に殘して居る．目下は Princeton 大學の招きに應じ Institute for Advanced Study に於て５月頃迄講義するといふことである．</seg></p>
        <p style="text-indent: 1em" rend="first-line-indent(1)"><seg source="#source-51022-51359">Bohr は毎年春か秋かに，主として Copenhagen に居たことのある有爲の物理學者を呼び集めて，現下の重要問題を討議することになつて居る．これは非公式ではあるが最も有意義の會議であつて，その爲に物理學は直接間接に大きな推進力を得て居る．</seg></p>
        <p style="text-indent: 1em" rend="first-line-indent(1)"><seg source="#source-51359-51925">尚 Bohr はベルギーの Solvay 會議の會長であつて，此處でも同樣に新しい問題が討議せられる．嘗て不確定性原理が論ぜられた時などは，Einstein と Bohr との間に深更に至る迄興味ある討論が行はれたといふことである．Einstein は前から今日の量子論に反對の意見をもち，先年 Podolsky，Rosen と共著で“量子論は物理學的實在を完全に記述し得るや”といふ論文を出して，否定的の囘答を與へて居る．Bohr はこれに反駁の論文 </seg><hi rend="superscript" source="#source-51925-51969"><seg source="#source-51925-51929">(60)</seg></hi><seg source="#source-51969-52045"> を發表したが，要するにこれは Einstein の誤解である．</seg></p>

        <p style="text-indent: 1em" rend="first-line-indent(1)"><seg source="#source-52166-52635">Bohr 教授を我國に招聘することは長い間の宿題であつて，昭和10年にはこれが實現する段取となつて居たが，長男不慮の逝去によつて中止となつた．然し昭和12年春，三井，三菱，原田積善會，住友本社，逸見製作所，伊藤竹之助氏，森矗昶氏の援助により遂に招聘は實現せられ，夫人並に次男同伴米國を經て４月15日に來朝せられたのであつた．</seg></p>
        <p style="text-indent: 1em" rend="first-line-indent(1)"><seg source="#source-52635-53041">それから５月19日に長崎から上海に向けて出帆せられる迄，約１箇月餘の滯在の間に12囘の講演と４囘の討論とを行ひ，その上に10囘に近い餐會に出席して寸暇もない忙しい日を送られたのであつた．これ等の公會に於ける講演に挨拶に，Bohr 教授は其薀蓄と熱意とを以て聽衆に多大の感動を與へた．</seg></p>
        <p style="text-indent: 1em" rend="first-line-indent(1)"><seg source="#source-53041-53574">其説く所は古典量子論より始めて相補性に及び，原子核，宇宙線を始めとして生物學，心理學，哲學等に關する最も基本的な今日の問題に就いて，教授獨自の見解を吐露して廣く我學術の研究發展に刺戟を與へた．現に目下我國に行はれつつある物理學，生物學上の研究の中で，其端を當時教授との討論に發したもののあることは，此招聘が如何に我學界の進歩を促したかを示すものである．</seg></p>
        <p style="text-indent: 1em" rend="first-line-indent(1)"><seg source="#source-53574-53815">Bohr の講演に對する態度は極めて良心的であり，又常に細心の注意を拂つて居る．日本に於ける講演でも，會場に出る迄話の内容について心を碎いて居られるやうに見受けた．</seg></p>
        <p style="text-indent: 1em" rend="first-line-indent(1)"><seg source="#source-53815-54243">Bohr の講演は前以て數式や圖を黒板に一杯書いて置いて，その順序に話すのである．然し其講演は決して解り易いものではない．それは言葉の關係もあり又内容からも來るのである．Bohr に一度も接したことの無い人，又は其意見について少しの豫備知識も持たぬ人には，Bohr の講演は難解たるを免れないであらう．</seg></p>
        <p style="text-indent: 1em" rend="first-line-indent(1)"><seg source="#source-54243-54748">Bohr は夙くから東洋の文化に對して，深い興味をもつて居たので，來朝中にも我國新舊の學問藝術に多大の關心を示し，其核心を把握體得する所斟からぬやうであつた．一體同教授の思想，態度には東洋的の色彩を帶びた所があつた爲でもあらうが，我國滯在中接する人に非常な感銘を與へたやうである．此の相互の諒解は將來我が學術のため喜ぶべき實を結ぶであらう．</seg></p>
        <p style="text-indent: 1em" rend="first-line-indent(1)"><seg source="#source-54748-55275">忙しい日程の中にも鎌倉，日光，松島，箱根，京都，奈良，宮島，雲仙と順を追つて，走り乍らも見物する暇のあつたことは幸であつた．その中で箱根で見た富士山は忘れられぬ印象を殘したやうである．教授は米國で買つた活動寫眞機を以て，日本の風物を天然色で撮影して行つた．そして歸國してからはこれを映寫して，記憶を新たにしては樂んで居るといふ筆者への便りであつた．</seg></p>
