      <p style="text-indent: 1em" rend="first-line-indent(1)"><seg source="#source-48-185">ある人が私の作品のあるカメラ・ポジションを批評して、必然性がないから正しくないといつた。</seg></p>
      <p style="text-indent: 1em" rend="first-line-indent(1)"><seg source="#source-185-436">私の考えではカメラ・ポジションに必然性がないということはあたりまえのことで、もしも必然性などというものを認めなければならぬとしたら非常に不都合なことになるのである。</seg></p>
      <p style="text-indent: 1em" rend="first-line-indent(1)"><seg source="#source-436-837">なぜならば一つのカットの撮り方は無数にあるわけで、その多くの可能性の中から一つを選ぶことが芸術家に与えられた自由なのである。したがつて必然性を認めるということは芸術家の自由を認めないというのと同じことで、それならば映画製作に芸術家などは要らないことになつてしまう。</seg></p>
      <p style="text-indent: 1em" rend="first-line-indent(1)">カメラ・ポジション選定の過程においてもしも必然性を認めるとしたら、それは芸術家がその主観において、「よし」と判断する悟性以外にはあり得ない。そしてその意味においてならば私は自分の作品のカメラ・ポジションには残らず必然性があると主張することもできるし（実際においては必ずしもそうは行かないが）、何人も外部からそれを否定する材料を持たないはずである。</p>
      <p style="text-indent: 1em" rend="first-line-indent(1)"><seg source="#source-1361-1794">これを要するに、カメラ・ポジションを決定する客観的必然性などというものは存在しないし、主観的必然性というものはあつても、それは第三者によつては存在が規定されない性質のものであるとすれば、結局カメラ・ポジションの必然性というものは決して批評の対象とはなり得ないものだということがわかる。</seg></p>
      <p style="text-indent: 1em" rend="first-line-indent(1)"><seg source="#source-1794-1976">カメラ・ポジションの選択はだれの仕事だろう。私は多くの場合、それを監督の仕事にすることが一等便宜だと考えるものである。</seg></p>
      <p style="text-indent: 1em" rend="first-line-indent(1)"><seg source="#source-1976-2329">もしもカメラマンがあらゆるカットの目的と存在を正しく理解し、常に必要にしてかつ十分なら画面の切り方と、内容の規定する条件の範囲において最も美しい画面構成をやつてくれることが絶対に確実であるならば、私は好んで椅子から立ち上りはしない。</seg></p>
      <p style="text-indent: 1em" rend="first-line-indent(1)"><seg source="#source-2329-2601">どんなに優秀なカメラマンでも人間である以上、絶対に誤解がないとは保し難い。これは決して不思議なことではない。一般に一つのカットの含むあらゆる意味を監督以上に理解している人はない。</seg></p>
      <p style="text-indent: 1em" rend="first-line-indent(1)"><seg source="#source-2601-2813">長年の私の経験が、カメラ・ポジションの誤謬を最少限度にとどめる方法は、結局監督自身がルーペをのぞくこと以外にはないということを私に教えた。</seg></p>
      <p style="text-indent: 1em" rend="first-line-indent(1)"><seg source="#source-2813-3010">ただし、右は主として内容に即したカメラ・ポジションについてであつて、必ずしも美的要求からくる画面の切り方にまでは言及していない。</seg></p>
      <p style="text-indent: 1em" rend="first-line-indent(1)"><seg source="#source-3010-3183">内容の目的に沿うにはすでに十分であるが、同時に美的要求を満すためには、さらにポジションの修正を要する場合がある。</seg></p>
      <p style="text-indent: 1em" rend="first-line-indent(1)"><seg source="#source-3183-3308">あるいはカットの性質上、内容とポジションがあまり密接な関係を持たない場合がある。</seg></p>
      <p style="text-indent: 1em" rend="first-line-indent(1)"><seg source="#source-3308-3556">たとえば描写的なカットなどにおいては往々にして美的要求だけがポジションを決定する場合がある。このような部分、あるいは場合に関しては監督は一応手を引くべきであろう。</seg></p>
      <p style="text-indent: 1em" rend="first-line-indent(1)"><seg source="#source-3556-3635">なぜならば、それらは純粋にカメラ的な仕事だから。</seg></p>
      <p style="text-indent: 1em" rend="first-line-indent(1)"><seg source="#source-3635-3787">カメラ・ポジションの選択を監督に任せると、カメラマンの仕事がなくなりはしないかと心配する人がある。</seg></p>
      <p style="text-indent: 1em" rend="first-line-indent(1)"><seg source="#source-3787-5187">ところが実際において、決してそんな心配は要らないのである。試みにいま私が思いつくままに並べてみてもカメラマンの仕事は、まだこのほかに、配光の指定（これだけでも大変な仕事だ。）、ロケーションの場合は自然光線に関する場所および時間の考慮、絞りと露出の判断、レンズおよびフィルターの選択、ピントに関する考慮と測定、それに付随するあらゆる細心の注意、画面の調子に関するくふう、セット・小道具・衣裳・俳優の肉体などあらゆる色調ならびに線の調和などに対する関心、およびそれらの質・量あるいは運動による画面的効果の計算、カメラの運動に関する一切の操作、およびそれらを円滑ならしめるためのあらゆる注意、撮影機械に関する保存上および能率上の諸注意、現像場との諸交渉・打合せ、および特殊技術に関する協同作業、トーキー部との機械的連繋、および右の諸項を通じて監督との頭脳的協力、とちよつと数えてみてもこんなにある。しかも右のうち、どの一項をとつて考えてみても作品の効果に重大な関係を持たないものはないのだからなかなか大変な仕事だと思わなければならない。</seg></p>
      <p style="text-indent: 1em" rend="first-line-indent(1)"><seg source="#source-5187-5387">しかも右にあげたのは撮影現場における仕事だけであるが、カメラマンの仕事は撮影現場を離れると同時に解消するという性質のものではない。</seg></p>
      <p style="text-indent: 1em" rend="first-line-indent(1)"><seg source="#source-5387-5803">平素から芸術的理解力においては常に普通社会人の水準から一歩踏み出しているだけの修養が必要なことはもちろん、専門知識においてはまた常に世界の最前線から一歩も遅れない用意が肝腎である。しかも絶えず撮影に関するあらゆる機械的改善を、念頭から離さないだけの熱意を持つことが望ましい。</seg></p>
      <p style="text-indent: 1em" rend="first-line-indent(1)"><seg source="#source-5803-6015">これだけの仕事の幅と深さを謙虚な気持で正視している人ならば、おそらく無反省に自分の仕事の分野の拡大を喜ぶということはあり得ないはずである。</seg></p>
      <p style="text-indent: 1em" rend="first-line-indent(1)"><seg source="#source-6015-6321">万一、カメラのかたわらから監督を駆逐していたずらに快哉を叫ぶようなカメラマンがいるとしたら、その人はおそらくまだ一度も自分の仕事についてまじめに考えた経験を持たない人であろう。（昭和十二年五月二十四日）</seg></p>
