      <p style="text-indent: 1em" rend="first-line-indent(1)">この頃ピエル・ヴィエイという盲目の学者の書いた『盲人の世界』というのを読んでみた。</p>
      <p style="text-indent: 1em" rend="first-line-indent(1)">私は自分の専門としている科学上の知識、従ってそれから帰納された「方則」というものの成立や意義などについて色々考えた結果、人間の五感のそれぞれの役目について少し深く調べてみたくなった。そのためには五感のうちの一つを欠いた人間の知識の内容がどのようなものかという事を調べるのも、最も適当な手掛りの一つだと思われた。それを調べた上で、もし出来るならば、世界中の人間がことごとく盲あるいは聾であったとしたらこれらの人間の建設した科学は吾々の科学とどうちがうか、という問題を考えてみたいと思っている。そういうわけで盲人や聾者の心理というものに多大な興味を感ずるようになった。</p>
      <p style="text-indent: 1em" rend="first-line-indent(1)"><seg source="#source-1421-1496">それでこの間この書物を某書店の棚に並んだ赤表紙の</seg><ruby type="furigana" rend="right" source="#source-1496-1520"><rb>叢書</rb><rt>そうしょ</rt></ruby><seg source="#source-1520-1577">の中に見附けた時は、大いに嬉しかった。</seg><ruby type="furigana" rend="right" source="#source-1577-1601"><rb>早速</rb><rt>さっそく</rt></ruby><seg source="#source-1601-1813">読みかかってみるとなかなか面白い。丁度自分が知りたいと思っていたような疑問の解釈が到る処に出て来た。そして更に多くの新しい問題を暗示された。</seg></p>
      <p style="text-indent: 1em" rend="first-line-indent(1)"><seg source="#source-1813-2043">しかし私が今ここに書こうと思ったのはこの書物の紹介ではない。ただこれを読んでいる間に出会った一つの妙な言葉と、それについてちょっと感じた事だけである。</seg></p>
      <p style="text-indent: 1em" rend="first-line-indent(1)"><seg source="#source-2043-2685">この書物の第十五章は盲と芸術との交渉を述べたものであるが、その中に、盲で同時に聾のヘレン・ケラーという有名な女の自叙伝中に現れた視覚的美の記述がどういう意味のものかという事を論じた一節がある。その珍しい自叙伝中から二、三小節を引用してあるのを見ると、例えば雪の降る光景などがあたかも見るように空間的に描かれている。あるいは秋の自然界の美しい色彩が盲人が書いたとは思われないように実感的に述べてある。しかし著者はこのような光景は</seg><ruby type="furigana" rend="right" source="#source-2685-2700"><rb>固</rb><rt>もと</rt></ruby><seg source="#source-2700-2868">より盲者にとっては何らの体験にも相応しないバーバリズムに過ぎないという事を論じ、それから推論して、ケラーが彫刻を</seg><ruby type="furigana" rend="right" source="#source-2868-2880"><rb>撫</rb><rt>な</rt></ruby><seg source="#source-2880-2981">で廻せばその作者の情緒がよく分るといった言葉の真実性を疑っている。</seg></p>
      <p style="text-indent: 1em" rend="first-line-indent(1)"><seg source="#source-2981-3598">私はこれを読んだ時に何だか物足りないような気がした。ケラーの主張が本当であり得るような気がすると同時に、そうであらせたいという気もした。しかし自分は盲でない。ヴィエイという優れた盲の学者の説に反対すべき何らの材料も持ち合せない。しかし少なくもこれだけの事は云われると思う。すなわち芸術に対する感受性は必ずしも各人に普遍的なものではないから、ヴィエイが感得しないある物をケラーが感じるという可能性は残っている。</seg></p>
      <p style="text-indent: 1em" rend="first-line-indent(1)"><seg source="#source-3598-3655">ヘレン・ケラーは生後十八ヶ月目に重い</seg><ruby type="furigana" rend="right" source="#source-3655-3673"><rb>病</rb><rt>やまい</rt></ruby><seg source="#source-3673-3751">のために彼女の魂と外界との交通に最も大切な二つの窓を</seg><ruby type="furigana" rend="right" source="#source-3751-3772"><rb>釘付</rb><rt>くぎづ</rt></ruby><seg source="#source-3772-4131">けされてしまったにかかわらず、自由に自国語を話し、その上独、仏、羅、希にも通ずるようになった。指先を軽く相手の唇と鼻翼に触れていれば人の談話を了解する事が出来る。吾々の眼には奇蹟のような女である。匂や床の振動ですぐに人を識別する女である。</seg></p>
      <p style="text-indent: 1em" rend="first-line-indent(1)"><seg source="#source-4131-4322">しかし私が書こうと思ったのはケラーの弁護ではなかった。ヴィエイがケラー自叙伝中の記述に対して用いた psittacism という言葉がある。</seg></p>
      <p style="text-indent: 1em" rend="first-line-indent(1)"><seg source="#source-4322-4472">私はこのイズムには始めて出会ったので、早速英辞書をあけて調べていると psittaci（シッタサイ）というのは</seg><ruby type="furigana" rend="right" source="#source-4472-4493"><rb>鸚鵡</rb><rt>おうむ</rt></ruby>の類をさす動物学の学名で、これにイズムがついたのは、「反省的自覚なき心の機械的状態」あるいは「鸚鵡のような心的状態」という意味だとある。</p>
      <p style="text-indent: 1em" rend="first-line-indent(1)"><seg source="#source-4699-5085">私はこの珍しい言葉を覚えるために何遍も口の中で、シッタシズム、シッタシズムと繰り返した。それですっかり記憶してしまったが、それからは何かの拍子にこの妙な言葉が意外な時にひょっくり頭に浮んで来る。このような私の頭の状態もやはりこのイズムの一例かもしれない。</seg></p>
      <p style="text-indent: 1em" rend="first-line-indent(1)"><seg source="#source-5085-5441">そう云えば近頃世上で大分もてはやされる色々の社会的の問題に関する弁論や主張や宣伝中の一、二パーセント、あるいは二、三十パーセント、事によるともっと意外に大きいパーセントがやはり一種のシッタシズムの産物ではあるまいかという疑いが起った。</seg></p>
      <p style="text-indent: 1em" rend="first-line-indent(1)"><seg source="#source-5441-5587">秋季美術展覧会が始まって私も見に行った。そして沢山の絵を見ているうちにまた同様な疑いが起った。</seg></p>
      <p style="text-indent: 1em" rend="first-line-indent(1)"><seg source="#source-5587-5733">それからそれへと考えて行くと、日本国中到る処にこの妙なイズムが転がっているような気がして来た。</seg></p>
      <p style="text-indent: 1em" rend="first-line-indent(1)"><seg source="#source-5733-6215">最も意外に感じた事は自分が比較的によく体験し体得しているつもりでいた専門の学問上の知識の中にもよくよく吟味してみると怪しい部分が続々発見された。他人の研究を記述した論文を如何によく精読したところで、その研究者自身の頭の中まで潜り込む事が出来ない以上は、その人の得た結果を採用するという事にはやはりこのイズムの匂がある。</seg></p>
      <p style="text-indent: 1em" rend="first-line-indent(1)"><seg source="#source-6215-6859">しかしそこまで考えて行くと、人間の知識全体から自分の直接経験から得たものを引去った残りの全部は、結局同じようなものではあるまいかと思われ出した。少なくも仮りに私が机の上で例えば大根の栽培法に関する書物を五、六冊も読んで来客に講釈するか、あるいは神田へ行って労働問題に関する書物を十冊も買い込んで来て、それについて論文でも書くとすればどうだろう。つまりはヘレン・ケラーが雪景色を描き、秋の自然の色彩を叙すると同じではあるまいか。</seg></p>
      <p style="text-indent: 1em" rend="first-line-indent(1)"><seg source="#source-6859-7278">ここまで考えたが、事によるとこの最後の比較は間違っているかもしれないと思う。もう一度始めから考え直してみる必要がある。しかしもしこれが当を得ているとしたら、結局私は大根裁培法を論じていいものだろうか悪いものだろうか。もしこれが悪いとなると困るのは私ばかりではないかもしれない。</seg></p>
      <p style="text-indent: 1em" rend="first-line-indent(1)"><seg source="#source-7278-7412">まあいずれにしても私の大根裁培法が巣鴨の作兵衛氏に笑われる事だけは確かだろうと思った。</seg></p>
      <p style="text-indent: 1em" rend="first-line-indent(1)"><seg source="#source-7412-7526">こんな事を考えたのが動機となって、ふと大根が作ってみたくなったので、花壇の</seg><ruby type="furigana" rend="right" source="#source-7526-7556"><rb>鳳仙花</rb><rt>ほうせんか</rt></ruby><seg source="#source-7556-7619">を引っこぬいてしまってそのあとへ大根の種を</seg><ruby type="furigana" rend="right" source="#source-7619-7631"><rb>蒔</rb><rt>ま</rt></ruby><seg source="#source-7631-7804">いてみた。二、三日するともう双葉が出て来た。あの小さな黒の粒の中からこんな美しいエメラルドのようなものが出て来た。</seg></p>
      <p style="text-indent: 1em" rend="first-line-indent(1)"><seg source="#source-7804-7920">私はもう本ばかり読むのはやめてしばらく大根でも作ってみようかと考えている。</seg></p>
