ニイナ・フェドロヴァというロシア生れの女のひとの書いた小説「家族」は最近よんだ本の中で面白いものの一つでした。貧しい白系ロシア人の家族が天津テンシンで下宿屋をやって、日支事変の波の中に様々の経験を経てゆく物語ですが登場するイギリス人、支那人、日本人の生活を静かな公平な眼で見ていて、なかでもおばあさんの姿は実に立派で、小説の世界で光と暖さの源をなしているばかりでなく、私たちに生きてゆく何か一つの態度を教えます。
