      <p><seg source="#source-745-748">「</seg><ruby type="furigana" rend="right" source="#source-748-769"><rb>兵馬</rb><rt>へいば</rt></ruby><seg source="#source-769-772">の</seg><ruby type="furigana" rend="right" source="#source-772-787"><rb>権</rb><rt>けん</rt></ruby>」とか「<ruby type="furigana" rend="right" source="#source-799-823"><rb>弓馬</rb><rt>きゅうば</rt></ruby><seg source="#source-823-826">の</seg><ruby type="furigana" rend="right" source="#source-826-841"><rb>家</rb><rt>いえ</rt></ruby>」とかいう語もあるほど、遠い昔から軍事の要具とせられている勇ましい馬の鳴声は、「お馬ヒンヒン」という<ruby type="furigana" rend="right" source="#source-991-1006"><rb>通</rb><rt>とお</rt></ruby><seg source="#source-1006-1009">り</seg><ruby type="furigana" rend="right" source="#source-1009-1027"><rb>詞</rb><rt>ことば</rt></ruby><seg source="#source-1027-1141">にあるとおり、昔からヒンヒンときまっていたように思われるが、ずっと古い時代に</seg><ruby type="furigana" rend="right" source="#source-1141-1162"><rb>溯</rb><rt>さかのぼ</rt></ruby>ると案外そうでなかったらしい。『万葉集』巻十二に「いぶせくも」という語を「<ruby type="furigana" rend="right" source="#source-1273-1288"><rb>馬声</rb><rt>イ</rt></ruby><ruby type="furigana" rend="right" source="#source-1288-1303"><rb>蜂音</rb><rt>ブ</rt></ruby><ruby type="furigana" rend="right" source="#source-1303-1318"><rb>石花</rb><rt>セ</rt></ruby><ruby type="furigana" rend="right" source="#source-1318-1380"><rb><seg source="#source-1318-1321">蜘</seg><g ref="#gaiji-4-2-87-81" source="#source-1321-1368">蟵</g></rb><rt>クモ</rt></ruby>」と書いてあって、「馬声」をイに宛て、「蜂音」をブに宛てたのをみれば、当時の人々は、蜂の飛ぶ音をブと聞いたと共に、馬の鳴声をイの音で表わしていたのである。「いばゆ（嘶）」という語の「い」もまた馬の鳴声を摸した語であることは従来の学者の説いた通りであろう。蜂の音は今日でもブンブンといわれていて、昔と大体変らないが、馬の声をイといったのは我々には異様に聞える。馬の鳴声には古今の相違があろうと思われないのに、これを表わす音に今昔の相違があるのは不審なようであるが、それにはしかるべき理由があるのである。</p>
      <p style="text-indent: 1em" rend="first-line-indent(1)"><seg source="#source-2132-2165">ハヒフヘホは現今では</seg><hi rend="text-combine-upright" snh:layout-kind="tcy" source="#source-2165-2196"><seg source="#source-2165-2167">ha</seg></hi><hi rend="text-combine-upright" snh:layout-kind="tcy" source="#source-2196-2227"><seg source="#source-2196-2198">hi</seg></hi><hi rend="text-combine-upright" snh:layout-kind="tcy" source="#source-2227-2258"><seg source="#source-2227-2229">hu</seg></hi><hi rend="text-combine-upright" snh:layout-kind="tcy" source="#source-2258-2289"><seg source="#source-2258-2260">he</seg></hi><hi rend="text-combine-upright" snh:layout-kind="tcy" source="#source-2289-2320"><seg source="#source-2289-2291">ho</seg></hi><seg source="#source-2320-2362">と発音されているが、かような</seg><ruby type="furigana" rend="right" source="#source-2362-2377"><rb>音</rb><rt>おん</rt></ruby><seg source="#source-2377-2500">は古代の国語にはなく、江戸時代以後にはじめて生じたもので、それ以前はこれらの仮名は</seg><hi rend="text-combine-upright" snh:layout-kind="tcy" source="#source-2500-2531"><seg source="#source-2500-2502">fa</seg></hi><hi rend="text-combine-upright" snh:layout-kind="tcy" source="#source-2531-2562"><seg source="#source-2531-2533">fi</seg></hi><hi rend="text-combine-upright" snh:layout-kind="tcy" source="#source-2562-2593"><seg source="#source-2562-2564">fu</seg></hi><hi rend="text-combine-upright" snh:layout-kind="tcy" source="#source-2593-2624"><seg source="#source-2593-2595">fe</seg></hi><hi rend="text-combine-upright" snh:layout-kind="tcy" source="#source-2624-2655"><seg source="#source-2624-2626">fo</seg></hi><seg source="#source-2655-2715">と発音されていた。このｆ音は西洋諸国語や</seg><ruby type="furigana" rend="right" source="#source-2715-2733"><rb>支那</rb><rt>シナ</rt></ruby><seg source="#source-2733-2757">語におけるごとき</seg><ruby type="furigana" rend="right" source="#source-2757-2787"><rb>歯唇音</rb><rt>ししんおん</rt></ruby><seg source="#source-2787-2883">（上歯と下唇との間で発する音）ではなく、今日のフの音の子音に近い</seg><ruby type="furigana" rend="right" source="#source-2883-2919"><rb>両唇音</rb><rt>りょうしんおん</rt></ruby><seg source="#source-2919-3215">（上唇と下唇との間で発する音）であって、それは更に古い時代のｐ音から転化したものであろうと考えられているが、奈良時代には多分既にｆ音になっていたのであり、江戸初期に更にｈ音に変じたものと思われる。</seg></p>
      <p style="text-indent: 1em" rend="first-line-indent(1)"><seg source="#source-3215-3485">鳥や獣の声であっても、これを擬した鳴声が普通の語として用いられる場合には、その当時の正常な国語の音として常に用いられる音によって表わされるのが普通である。さすれば、国語の音として</seg><hi rend="text-combine-upright" snh:layout-kind="tcy" source="#source-3485-3516"><seg source="#source-3485-3487">hi</seg></hi>のような音がなかった時代においては、馬の鳴声に最も近い音としてはイ以外にないのであるから、これをイの音で摸したのは当然といわなければならない。なおまた後世には「ヒン」というが、ンの音も、古くは外国語、すなわち漢語（または<ruby type="furigana" rend="right" source="#source-3846-3867"><rb>梵語</rb><rt>ぼんご</rt></ruby><seg source="#source-3867-4121">）にはあったけれども、普通の国語の音としてはなかったので、インとはいわず、ただイといったのであろう（蜂の音を今日ではブンというのを、古くブといったのも同じ理由による）。</seg></p>
      <p style="text-indent: 1em" rend="first-line-indent(1)">それでは、馬の鳴声をヒまたはヒンとしたのはいつからであろうか。これについての私の調査はまだ極めて不完全であるが、私が気づいた例の中最も古いのは『落窪物語』の文であって、同書には「面白の駒」と<ruby type="furigana" rend="right" source="#source-4409-4430"><rb>渾名</rb><rt>あだな</rt></ruby><seg source="#source-4430-4442">せられた</seg><ruby type="furigana" rend="right" source="#source-4442-4481"><rb>兵部少輔</rb><rt>ひょうぶのすけ</rt></ruby>について、「首いと長うて顔つき駒のやうにて鼻のいらゝぎたる事かぎりなし。ひゝと<ruby type="furigana" rend="right" source="#source-4598-4616"><rb>嘶</rb><rt>いなな</rt></ruby><seg source="#source-4616-4622">きて</seg><ruby type="furigana" rend="right" source="#source-4622-4646"><rb>引放</rb><rt>ひきはな</rt></ruby>れていぬべき顔したり」と述べており、駒の嘶きを「ひゝ」と写している。これは「ひ」がまだ<hi rend="text-combine-upright" snh:layout-kind="tcy" source="#source-4775-4806"><seg source="#source-4775-4777">fi</seg></hi>と発音せられた時代のものである故、それに「ヒヽ」とあるのは上の説明と矛盾するが、しかしこの文には疑いがあるのである。すなわち<ruby type="furigana" rend="right" source="#source-4992-5028"><rb>池田亀鑑</rb><rt>いけだきかん</rt></ruby>氏の調査によれば、ここの本文が「ひゝ」とあるのは<ruby type="furigana" rend="right" source="#source-5100-5139"><rb>上田秋成</rb><rt>うえだあきなり</rt></ruby><seg source="#source-5139-5169">の校本だけであって、</seg><ruby type="furigana" rend="right" source="#source-5169-5214"><rb>中村秋香</rb><rt>なかむらしゅうこう</rt></ruby>の『落窪物語大成』には「ひう」とあり、伝<ruby type="furigana" rend="right" source="#source-5274-5298"><rb>真淵</rb><rt>まぶち</rt></ruby>自筆本には「ひと」とあり、更に九条家旧蔵本、真淵校本、<ruby type="furigana" rend="right" source="#source-5379-5400"><rb>千蔭</rb><rt>ちかげ</rt></ruby>校本その他の諸本には皆「いう」となっている。そのいずれが原本の面目を存するものかは未だ判断し難いが、「いう」とある諸本も存する以上、これを「ひゝ」または「ひう」であると決定するのは早計であって、むしろ、現存諸本中最も書写年代の古い九条家本（室町中期の書写）その他の諸本におけるごとく、「いう」とある方が当時の音韻状態から見て正しいのであるまいかと思われる。そうして「いう」の「う」は多分現在のンのごとき音であったろうから、「いう」はヒンでなく、むしろインにあたるのである。</p>
      <p style="text-indent: 1em" rend="first-line-indent(1)"><seg source="#source-6110-6140">江戸時代に入って、</seg><ruby type="furigana" rend="right" source="#source-6140-6188"><rb>鹿野武左衛門</rb><rt>しかのぶざえもん</rt></ruby>の『<ruby type="furigana" rend="right" source="#source-6194-6209"><rb>鹿</rb><rt>しか</rt></ruby><seg source="#source-6209-6212">の</seg><ruby type="furigana" rend="right" source="#source-6212-6236"><rb>巻筆</rb><rt>まきふで</rt></ruby>』（巻三、第三話）に、<ruby type="furigana" rend="right" source="#source-6269-6299"><rb>堺町</rb><rt>さかいちょう</rt></ruby><seg source="#source-6299-6338">の芝居で馬の脚になった男が</seg><ruby type="furigana" rend="right" source="#source-6338-6359"><rb>贔屓</rb><rt>ひいき</rt></ruby>の歓呼に答えて「いゝん<choice source="#source-6392-6398"><orig>／＼</orig><reg>〱</reg></choice><seg source="#source-6398-6401">と</seg><ruby type="furigana" rend="right" source="#source-6401-6416"><rb>云</rb><rt>いい</rt></ruby>ながらぶたいうちをはねまわつた」とあるが、この「いゝん」は『落窪物語』の「いう」と通ずるもので、馬の嘶きを「イ」で写す伝統が元禄の頃までも絶えなかったことを示す適例である。</p>
      <p>「お馬ヒンヒン」という語はいつ頃からあるかまだ確かめないが、<ruby type="furigana" rend="right" source="#source-6766-6787"><rb>一九</rb><rt>いっく</rt></ruby>の『東海道中膝栗毛』初編には「ヒイン<choice source="#source-6841-6847"><orig>／＼</orig><reg>〱</reg></choice>」または「ヒヽヒン<choice source="#source-6874-6880"><orig>／＼</orig><reg>〱</reg></choice>」など見えている。多分もっと以前からあったのであろうが、これは<hi rend="text-combine-upright" snh:layout-kind="tcy" source="#source-6973-7004"><seg source="#source-6973-6975">hi</seg></hi><seg source="#source-7004-7094">の音が既に普通に用いられていた時分のことであるから、あっても</seg><ruby type="furigana" rend="right" source="#source-7094-7121"><rb>差支</rb><rt>さしつかえ</rt></ruby><seg source="#source-7121-7130">ない。</seg></p>
